Shell Helix Ultra Extra from VW Hatfield Bryanston. It is 507.00 and about R70/l from the dealers.

castrol and shell make 507.00
Midas also sell havoline in 507.00
Goldwagen should have.
There are many HX7 shell oils. The 505.01 is the HX-7 AV one.

That's the one I use in my LC. You should see the petrol attendants kak themselves as they put 95 in the tank while I put prominently marked DIESEL oil in the engine.

Got hold of some 507 this morning at VW Hatfield (Pretoria)
5 x 1l bottles 540.20 , was surprised at how good the price was.
Castrol Edge Professional, Long Life III 5w 30
Was using hx 7 diesel (now only realising it's 505.01) that was at the last service around 8 000 km's ago. Should be interesting to see how it goes with 507 .... looking forward to fetching car from my guy after work.

the new API SN Spec Castrol Edge 5w30 which is widely available is also a 504/507 spec oil which meets Dexos 2 as well so should be very robust.

Nothing wrong with Castrol. As i said before, the fact that these oils perform to the exact same standard and specification makes them virtually identical in performance. Thats the whole point of these certifications. 505/507 has a cleanliness limit of maximum deposit formation (as with all other certifications) which gets tested to the max in the relevant applications. So its impossible that Castrol was the cause of the sludge. Mobil or Shell would have had exactly the same issue in that engine that you are referring to.
The problem you saw was caused by an issue with the engine, surrounding components or neglected oil changes, NOT the oil.
I have seen countless UOA's where Castrol keeps the internals as clean as Mobil and Shell.
BMW only uses Castrol and i have never heard of a modern BMW engine sludge up.
The Veyron uses off the shelf Castrol Edge, and thats a 16 cyl quad turbo. I am pretty sure its good enough to run in our cars
Even VW recommends Castrol now as their preferred / associated oil which they partnered with. Often with these partnerships come joint development so it might be best running Castrol in your VW

It's all about money. Castrol probably tendered the best deal.
castrol may conform to the required spec but I believe others exceed the stated spec. (just my opinion)
I used castrol in my jetta and it created sludge after 8000km. I switched to delo400 and the oil stayed golden for 6000km and the oil usage stopped.
I for one, will never, ever buy castrol engine oil again.
On the other hand, their gear oils seem to be brilliant!

which Castrol did you use before the Delo ? An oil that does NOT discolour quickly is a bad sign, that is the fact that it was still golden means the oil wasnt removing and trapping the carbon deposits the way it should (which would not be the case with an HDEO) OR there was no carbon deposits left as the Castrol cleaned it up
Delo is a group 2+ diesel oil aka a HDEO (Heavy Duty Engine Oil) mainly used in trucks which produce higher soot levels and rev much lower. With HDEO's, the oil discolours almost instantly due to its stronger cleaning properties.
So the reason for the Delo 400 staying clean was the fact that the Castrol cleaned up all the sludge before using the Delo proving that the Castrol did a fantastic job in preventing sludge formation.
If you had to use the exact same Castrol again, the result in your oil colour would have been EXACTLY the same as with the Caltex oil.
Also, define sludge. By the sounds of things, you are confusing the fact that the oil turning black is sludge which its not. Its an indication that the engine oil is actually trapping the deposits the way its should.
Fact is, in the end, Castrol makes brilliant oils. Especially their Edge range. Any slating of the product is purely based on not understanding how engine oils work, perform and are specified.
The fact that people comment things like "Castrol sludges" could not be further from the truth and spreading such misinformation is preventing others from using a fantastic product which is actually well priced and commonly availible

As always thanks for the more in detail information I am sure the newer Castol is a great oil, But Ill still stick to Shell for engine oil. Gearbox oil though Castrol works really well.

Dead right. I walked into Hatfield VW gave them my vin number and they gave me Castrol.

Small note to add.
when running 505.01 when flooring it, there was plenty of black smoke behind me ... now with 507, only get small bursts of smoke, seems to leave a little cloud in the background.
Performance and economy seems identical though

So Miela was correct. As mentioned previously, I am not worried about deposits from burn off as we have seen that TDI engine ports do not get that dirty (see Carbon doctor...). I am more worried about acid and sludge as this diminishes the protective properties of the oil....

I understand the way oil works.
I did three changes on castrol. All three times there was tar like substances under the tappet cover.
Switched to delo 400 and 3 changes later the oil remained golden and underneath the tappet cover it was clean. I did about 6 changes on delo 400 and when I removed the sump to fix a nagging oil leak since purchase the engine was spotless.
This was after about 6 changes of delo 400 (316'000km on the odo)

507.00 is the required spec for all VW/Audi diesels except pre-DPF touareg R5/V10.
Castrol can't be that bad to get VW's approval but I'm not a fan due to personal experience. My personal experience is in no way a large test data criteria.
Only thing I would really push for is that whatever oil you use, change it every 10'000km.

How does Liqui Moly TopTec 4200 Longlife compare to Castrol or Shell? I can't find either of the latter in Bloem but can get Liqui Moly 5L for under R500

Hi
Helix ultra extra 507 meets and surpasses 505.01 specs so it basically supercedes it. We'll probably see the oil companies supercede it in the future. It does smoke less as it a low ash oil.

Can anyone suggest a place in Cape Town with a good variety of oils to look at and choose from?
Need some oil for my Jetta. It has got the BXE 1.9 tdi engine.
I've used Castrol edge in the wifes jetta 4 tdi and at 248 000km the car used absolutely no oil at all (and without any sludge at any time

)... even after hitting a kudu it still didn't use oil...
Will it be better to pay the extra money and get the 507 spec edge professional?
I'm curious though about the shell helix who some people seem to swear by. Maybe I should try it and see if it makes any difference to the car. Can anyone give some details about the specific Helix to use in the 1.9 PD?
Any feedback will be appreciated, I realize I'm a bit of a hijacker but since it's on more or less the same topic I hope I'll be forgiven...
