My first attempt(s) at detailing (Non VAG content) – Part 2

Post by Rally1 »

After completing the Merc that I did in Part 1 , my wife also persuaded me to detail her car in December. The car is a 2009 Remini Red Land Rover Freelander i6 which we bought in June 2009.

This is a very comfortable and enjoyable car and we drive it almost every weekend, to such an extent, that the mileage is currently on 21 000km!

Firstly some random before pics:

Exterior
The exterior did not look very nice, as the dealership send the car for Amazing Glaze before we took ownership. Apparently this is done to remove the wax that the car is shipped with from the UK, but I have never been a fan of glazing and therefore I decided to do a proper detail on the car. There was also lots of brake dust on the wheels and all sort of raod grime on the body…

Some dwoos at my wife’s work has banged his door onto the car twice already and the damage was clear. This p!isses me off like nothing else

Interior
We decided to go for the beige leather interior which might not be a very clever move on an ”off-road” vehicle, but it does look very nice. Ever sine we got the car, there was a few dirty spots that bothered me on the interior. It seems like everywhere where the factory sticks on this protective film that the dealership removes before delivery, the dust was accumulating on the sticky parts. Also, it seems like the guys who washes her car as work, hangs onto the A-pillar interior in order to wash the roof which resulted in very dirty spots on the trim.

Engine
The engine had a lot of dust from our off-road excursions and visits to the Kruger – also a few leaves found their way here.

Detailing:
1. 1st Wash Down

I again started with a complete was down of the vehicle using a diluted APC solution (CYCLO CM30 CYCLONIC CLEANER).

Brushes for the wheels and under carriage worked nicely – no bleeding fingers

2. Engine Clean

After the wash down I also cleaned the engine bay with APC. After drying, I used Megs Gold Class Trim Detailer on all the black parts.

Some random after shots of the engine:

3. Interior Clean
After the engine clean I moved the car into my garage as it started getting dark. I again used a very mild Cyclo APC solution to clean the trim panels. (I forgot to take after pics of the A-pillars and interior mirrors, but they are looking like new again)

I vacuumed the complete interior and used Adams Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner to clean the carpets. I cleaned the seats with Adams Leather & Interior Cleaner and I finished them off with Chemical Guys - Leather Conditioner Restore. I also cleaned the loose carpets.

Some after pics of the interior:

4. Chassis & Wheels

The next day I moved the car out of the garage and removed the wheels. I cleaned the suspension components and wheels with Sonax Extreme Rim Cleaner. After drying, I sprayed a generous amount of Adams - Invisible Undercarriage Spray on all the suspension parts.

I cleaned the wheels with the Extreme Rim Cleaner, where after I finished them off with CG Wheel Guard. This product is very similar to Smartwax Rimwax, but slightly more expensive. (I actually prefer the Smartwax to be honest)

I also applied Megs Hot Shine Tyre Gel to the tyres.

I thought I cleaned them when they were on the car!

Tape Up

After re-fitting the wheels, I taped up the vehicle for the polishing & waxing steps.

6. Polishing & Waxing

After moving the car into the garage, I followed a 3 step process using Chemical Guys Laser Buff, followed by CG All in one Polish followed by CG Butter Wet Wax. The results were pretty amazing, and even the marks left on the door by the other idiot were removed. I used my new Megs G220 DA polisher which was a great investment.

… that evening it got pretty late…

7. Final touches
The next day, I gave the car a final wash down using Megs Gold Class shampoo. After drying, I used Megs Gold Class Trim Detailer to make the black parts look nice again and I used Mothers® Glass Cleaner to clean and polish the windows.

Summary:
This work took me about 3 days to complete (only working part-time). I was again impressed with most of the products, which I purchased, especially all the stuff from Adams. The Megs GA 220 DA Polisher with the Lake Country Pads is a must for any detailer!

Thank you for looking!

Hi zaa,
Thanks for the comment

I must say, I was inspired after what you did to my GTI

Yeah, you are right - It gave me a good workout to do this car. Just taking those wheels off was a mission
