Changing New Wheels from 4 X 100 to 5 X 100

Post by Orbit24 »

Hey Guys,

Need some advice here.
Finally tracked down my dream rims but they're 4 X 100 PCD. Which doesn't work on a G4..

There are a number of people including The Wheel Shop in Joburg who will re-drill to a 5 X 100 PCD for a cost of R1200.
I was also thinking of going the adaptor plate route on the back axle to increase the track by maybe 8mm. Thoughts?
Please let me know if this is adviseable or safe?

Thx in advance!

Hi there,

I think the best option would be to re-drill the hubs..Some guys change the pcd of the rim itself.
But re-drilling new holes on the hub will be the bettter option.
Cos on the MK1's many guys have gone from 4/100 to 5/100,and have re-drilled,and it works great.
But get it professionally done!!

So you want to take a heavy car that has 5 x100 hubs out the factory and drill the hubs to 4 x 100. I'd consider that unsafe. What would be the only safe option in my opinion is to have the wheels modded to 5 x 100 professionally.

Thanks Guys for the input.

I think my main concern as Panic mentioned is that the Golf 4 is a bit of a heavy beast and if you have the rims modded to 5 X 100 then you may have a bit of a weak spot around the hub of the rim due to all of the holes that have been drilled and patched. Bit of a Noob to this. do they drill a complete set of new holes?

My Golf 3 on the other hand will have the hubs drilled to fit the 16" rims off the golf 4 as this seems to be an accepted way to work this conversion.

it really depends on the rim make and construction. I personally hate rim mods but to go to 4 bolt on the car hub from 5 I also don't like. going 5 hole on a 4 hole hub on the car is fine as there is lot of strength there.

Get the rims modded but check around for a place that will inspect the rim for defects after welding.

Thanks Killerwatt,

I think Wheelcrafters would be a safe bet eh?

Used them before for straightening.

Thanks again guys.
Just phoned them again to get a pic of the rear of the hub section. Got a more pro-active guy who seems certain he can help. We'll wait and see.

Whilst we're on it - any idea what these are? The website calls it an RS1 made by XS.

Looking at this remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder;)

Yup 100% sure those same 5x100 as well. Rather look around and get those. Try at autostyle think they had a set.

Personally will not mod rims to fit on my car. If rim does not come in correct PCD for my car, will have to look for one that does fit. But that's just me.... :driving:

Yeh those do look good - the first one is the same as the one I'm looking for. Autostyle has not had it in months.
Also - my car is a rep-mobile so I need more rubber between my rims and the tarmac than 18"s can offer.

This is bordering on being 'off topic', but...

You guys say the MK4 was a heavier car and since it came with 5x100 wheels its not a good idea to change to 4x100. Now, was the Jetta V5 4x100 or 5x100?

My brother bought a set of BBS wheels that the owner claimed came off a V5, but they are 4x100. I think I once heard (possibly on this forum) that the V5's were 4x100, but that doesn't seem logical. Can anyone confirm?

If they were 4x100 then I suppose changing to your car to 4x100 wouldn't really be that bad of an idea? Although my personal choice would be to get a 5x100 wheel rather than have the hubs or (worse) wheels redrilled.

V5 was definitely 5/100.

The last 4/100 VW's you got were the MK3's.

Soooooo. If I read your post correctly Polodude, you think you made a mistake buying those rims and they are so 2007 and you'd like to flog them to some one who will look after them?

The facelift Golf 3 cabrio came out std with the same BBS wheel as the first V5's, with the exception that the cabrio was 4/100 and the V5 5/100. Your brother probably got a set of the cabrio wheels.
