new *** lifters installed and still noisy.. tick tick tick

Post by TinTin »

i recently installed a new set of *** performance lifters in a 2 litre 8 valve motor. i can notice a smoother power delivery, but they are still noisy.

What could be causing these lifters to be noisy?

Blocked oil feed to one or more lifters?

thanks

i have a oil pressure gauge installed and the oil pressure is spot on. so don't think that it is the oil pump.

Interesting, go on... Sorry if question sounds dumb, but will that be in the case where the pump is not pumping enough or is pumping too much?

I had a noisy lifter in my Velo so I changed all 8, serviced the car and changed the sparkplugs at the same time. A week later the ticking was back so I thought, this time just live with it - which I did for 10000km. At this point I discovered a loose sparkplug making the noise, very similar to a noisy lifter. I could kick myself for making wrong assumptions and suffering the consequences for so long :bang:

I used Shell Plus, the semi-synthetic blue bottle one in my golf. I found that full-synth oil on my 8v made the lifters more noisy.

I know that its been said before that noisy lifters are part and parcell of the VW motors

Howsit bru

Can you describe the ticking noise? Is it loud and heavy or a light tapping sound? Also what rpm does it occur at?

Another thing i noticed is that the 050 'A' grind cam causes a light tapping sound. The lobes close and open very fast under about 1mm of lift. Pretty sure most 2.0 motors have this cam.

mine is heavy and loud, almost as if someone left a spanner under the tappet cover and only happens at full Operating temp and at idle 950-1100rpm ....

I have narrowed it down to oil pressures @ the head, anywhere below the 0.5-0bar mark and the lifters start clunking away.
1 bar and above and the lifter noise goes away....

Going to try install a 2.0 oil pump @ some point and see if it goes away.

mp9 injectors hardly ever go clicketyclick...if it does, its not as noticeable as lifter noise

pretty much sounds like that. it can't be the cam because i torqued it down to 20nm.

i have a 272 billet cam in the motor. the noise pretty much occurs at all temperatures and all through the rev range, but it does seem to become less at high RPM'S. the oil pressure also seems fine one the motor has warmed up.

defiantly not the injectors.

0.5-0bar mark
Maxx600RR.. when do you have an oil pressure of 0.5 - 0 bar?? My gauge never sees these readings and is also taken from the head.

My CTI did it aswell when I bought the car with 90 000km on the clock.
A very expensive R600 to R800 later for new installed lifters and after about 2 months the noise was back again. I changed oils to different brands whenever it was time for a oil change and don't even mention the people that almost fell on their backs when I told them I use Castrol GTX2 that time when it was still available. UTTER CRAP. That oil never gave me problems. I even did a sump service because everyone told me "Duhh, that oil makes sludge". Well, NOT!!! My sump was clean I could eat out of it. The previous owner also used GTX2. But to come back to the problem, I am now running Engen 15W-40 and it is still there at 160 000km on the clock. It is quiet when engine is cold and ticks when hot. Especially in summer.

Just live with it. When something breaks tell us and then we will all know what causes it as this subject was asked so many times before and I didn't really see a definite answer.
My oil pressure is also fine on the oil pressure gauge.

While we are still on this issue of noisy lifters, I've read somewhere and I've also heard from friends about "Bleeding the lifters"? Does anyone ever heard of such?

Eish loud tapping means no oil at lifters or the piston inside the lifters is stuck.

Maxx yours sounds definitly like the oil pump.

Before you install the lifters you soak them in oil. Dont know exactly why though.
Now im wondering if its to prevent an airlock?

 WOW Ok I think lets start by defining noisy lifters.
I think a slight tick, tick, tick or slight drrr sounds coming from the lifters is nothing compared to the loud CLUNK, clank, clunk :bang: bolt loose under the tappet cover sound me and some of the others like Tin Tin seem to be getting.

Trust me if it was just a tick, tick, tick sound I would quite happily live with it  but it's not  :bang:

Then Tin Tin regarding your question, lets say I jump in da car at work ready to go home, car is cold right
Then start driving, see readings of 5-6 bar under throttle and then about 3-4 bar @ idle. Remember car is still cold
Once I get of Bryanston drive, roughly 25km or so the car is just about at normal running temps, see readings of 2-3bar under throttle and about 1.5-1 bar @ idle. By the time I get home I see readings of 2-1 bar under throttle and 0.5-0bar @ idle but by then the car is HOT from sitting in traffic.

I have the Smoked Auto Gauge with Electric Sender which is mounted to the side of the head. Tin Tin I have checked my plugs twice now and apart from them being black as sh!t from the car being so rich the are fine. None of them where wet or burnt or odd colors. I checked my plugs first as it is a tell tale sign of what might be going on inside the motor. At least I know for sure my rings and Valves are ok  Maybe just check your plugs to give you a indication of where to look next

Faulty lifters usually only generate a noise at hot idle.
Other causes of cylinder head noise are worn lifter 'pockets' (the recess in which the lifter rests) or worn valve guides & stems. If the lifter is not free to rotate as designed, it will eventually wear the pocket out & sometimes also the valve stem & guide. This is not necessarily the fault, but just possibilities. If the noise is bearable, just live with it & save yourself a few bucks.

Killerwatt do think maybe the oil channels that feed the lifters are blocked causing the lifters to starve of oil @ idle and high engine temps ?
Oh something else I thought might be part of my problem, could this all be somehow related to the cam being brand new when being dropped in and then over time the cam has had time to run in properly, thus causing the lifter noise. This will only apply to CAM's with higher duration lift right ?? 272,276,288 and 300  :???:

Sarel Eloff told me that a batch of cams sold by Volkspares were incorrectly hardened and suffered from premature lobe wear, don't know if it will cause a noise or just affect performance tho.
