What kind of mods can you do on a 1.9TDi?

Post by Bird87_ZA »

Hi guys,

After taking a spin in Arnu's (soon to be sold) GTi, I just want more power out of my ride.

I would just like to know what kind of mods can be done to the 1.9TDi (Comfortline) motor. I do not know the slightest thing about engine mods, so I would like to know from whether a free flow on a diesel is possible to the pros and cons of adding a bigger turbo and everything inbetween.

As said, I have no clue when it comes to mods, so I also want to know what downpipes and dump valves are and if you can add them to a diesel motor?

Thanks!! :) :geek:

Best bang for buck would be a remap from FRC or REVO or the like.

Swapping turbos out and all that gets expensive.

That I can understand. But what kind of mods are possible on a diesel? The 1.9TDi especially.

Quick questions: (I did read about it on Wikipedia, but still don't understand their function and if they can be used on diesels)

What are:

Dump valves?
Blowofvalves?
Downpipes?
Wastegates?

And can these be used on TDi engines. :)

Also, what is the main function of a intercooler, and how does fitting an aftermarket affect performance (I know if increases it, but why?)

Sorry for all these n00b questions, but I've only had a diesel for a year now, and my @ss is itching for more power now...

Dump valves - Blow off valves - Waste gates. As a TDI driver you don't even have to think about those words :) Modding a TDI is a different ballgame. A more complicated ballgame unfortunately because not many guys know too much about it in SA.

First things you want to do is get some software (Revo/FRC/Dimsport are all good) on your car and improve air flow. Get a free flow exhaust conversion. Its debateable whether this does much for power but it should give a bit and improve the sound too. Get a K&N or BMC flat panel air filter in and you can also upgrade your intake. These mods honestly aren't going to give you loads of power but with a ecu software upgrade the difference will be noticeable. If you do it I'd suggest getting a front mount intercooler as well because it will extend your turbos life by keeping it cooler. Plus more cold air = more power. Cold air is denser than warm air and carries more oxygen for your engine to burn.

On older Golf TDIs everyone who is modding their cars seems to upgrade their injectors as well and this gives a big boost to power but on MK5's your option is really only upgrading to 2.0 TDI injectors which cost a FORTUNE and then you will anyways struggle to find a mechanic who will firstly agree that it is worth the effort. So yea, software + zorst + air filter + intake + intercooler.

Before you do the software/ecu flash ,do all the hardware mods, then you get the benefit of them all at once.

1.Air intake (PD160 upgrade)
2.BMC or K&N flta pad filter
3.Exhaust
4.FMIC (front mount intercooler)
5.Software

If you want you can upgrade the turbo but on your car that will need the injectors aswell and they are $$$,Have a chat wilth Ruan9n ,he did the 5 mods on his car and came out 100%.

All you need to know.

Dumpvalves and kak are useless on a TDI.

As for modifications to a TDi, the world is your oyster, but you must consider what you want to achieve and what you want to spend  And don't forget the other side of making more power, which is keeping it in check and control and safe...

+1 I did all 5 and went from 74kw 240nm to 105kw 350nm last I had it on a dyno, should be closer to 110kw 370nm now on the same dyno

A lot more is possible if you have 96kw 300nm to start with :hi:

So much to learn, so little time!!

Thanks for all the replies.

I have the 74KW Polo, so I will be looking at the same kind of power that ruan9n has after his upgrades.

What places have the best prices? I know of Autostyle, but they sometimes seem expensive (but then again the most modding I've ever done on a car is a flatbed filter in a 1.6 Polo, so I might just be ill informed).

Autostyle doesn't have a BMC one for the 07 Polo... Only a K&N one at R540.
