MP9 motor power band

Post by mk1-8valve. »

Hey all

I would just like to know what the power band of the 1.4i, 1.6i, 1.8i, 2.0 Mp9 motors are, specifically a 1.8i MP9 like mine???
No use in rev'ing the nuts off the motor past the power band limit.

Thanks

Yea, my 1.8i with 276 peaks at about 5400rpm according to my Gtech and my 1.6i was similar.

@vw_mk1_life at what rpm does your 276 cam start making power?

I had a 272 cam in my citi when it was 1800 carb,
now I can't decide on whether to get a 272 or 276 cam end of this year.

Normally, if a petrol driven motor is not modded, the "powerband" should be between 3000 and 5500rpm as that is the range where the stock cam would be operating at it's best. Peak power would be roughly at 5500 rpm and peak torque at around 4000rpm.

But keep in mind, no two motors are equal. For example: while your motor would be making max power @ say 6150rpm and max torque at 4285rpm, another guy with a seemingly identical motor would make figures at 5989rpm and 4322rpm.

Best way to actually see where the power and torque peaks are is to have it checked via dyno and drive according to where the power and torque peaks are.

Well it seems to start at 2500rpm maybe a little later.

Traffic was fine when my uncle set it up, I couldnt really feel a difference but someone else has set it
up and its fine for traffic but on a steep hill you gotta ride the clutch abit. Not that bad at all.

Thanks Jetta2, vw_mk1_life, :)

@Jetta2, I really should dyno the car once the new cam is fitted and then I will know exactly where my car makes its power and then use that info. to my advantage. Will you be getting any cams end of this year and if so, how much will they cost?

Some 276 cams cost 650, others 1200, how to tell which is best??
I think I should go 276 cam, and have the mp9 box remapped for it.

The ones for 650 are cut cams, the ones for 1200 is a forged billet cam....

Readinf wrong, Gtech as in Gtech, performance measureing thing. No laughing at the power, thats like at the road power and takes the weight you punch in to get that figure so not very accurate. :D
When I dynoed it peak power looks a bit over 5500rpm.

Heres what it looks like.

HMMM , my car's powerband is definitely from 4000rpm onwards.... it makes power all the way to 6000 and tapers of very lightly to 6400 rpm...

so it's a very wide band of power for me with the tachometer begging to dive deep into red 8)

Oh yes, with the 268cam the power picks up from 2000rpm

now as you see by sixteen10s reply having a bigger cam moves the power band to higher rpm, this is why you cant use big cams on smaller engines as they naturally have lesser low down power due to smaller displacement, i can just imagine what a 276 cam will feel like on a 1.4i, it would be like vtec yo

@sixteen10, so your 2.0 has enough low down torque and can hold out till 4000rpm until the power comes in, or do you luanch it at high revs to get into your power band as quick as possible.

@Dood, I dont wanna move my power band too far up, cos then it will take longer to reach the ideal rev range. Has anyone tried a 268 deg cam on there 1.8i's? or would a 272deg suit my engine better? It would be great in my car could start pulling from 2500/3000rpm..

@DeeDubz, yoh, thats what I'm looking for, I also want my power to pick up early in the rev range. Your motor power band has a nice spread, limit of 7200rpm is very cool.
Deedubz please tell me what mods you have done on our cabby? Any headwork done?
