Jetta mk4 2003, 2.0 Highline
Like all VW owners I have found some irritating problems that need attention. Other than replacing expensive parts, I hope you guys have some insight.
1. My passenger door will open when unlocked, sometimes, and other times not open from either side. I have found that when the car has sat for hours, and I unlock, the door will open from both sides. But immediately locking and unlocking again, it will not open. Fuses are fine. What could be the problem?
2. The driver side door panel central locking button won't work unless I hit it hard. The window buttons all work including the side view mirror dial.
Can I repair this and how?
I have checked youtube and none of the videos have a satisfying answer other than replacing the door mechanism. If the door lock mechanism was broken it wouldn’t open at all, no?

Re: Jetta mk4 door problems
On point 1:
Is the pin/knob moving upwards when unlocking, or staying down? And is it making any sound, as though attempting to unlock, or not?
If the pin stays down, but is making a sound, it is a mechanical blockage in the lock. I had the same in one of my Golf 4 rear doors, and after a while, the module didn't even attempt to unlock the door anymore. Then, years later, suddenly it sprang back to life. I think it has to do with the micro-switch sensors in the lock, that sense whether it is locked or unlocked.
If mine sometimes still blocks, I find that it helps to press the pin further down while I cycle the central locking. This allows the lock to fully lock, and then fully unlock. But I haven't actually opened the lock to service it, so I can't say whether my theory is correct.
On point 2:
I have the same problem in my Golf 4. It is obviously a contact problem in the switch itself. If it were a broken cable, it would stop working permanently. I have not opened the switch (yet).
