HI,

Anyone know of any issues with the 1.4 Tsi with regard to high oil usage from around 75000km? Can of oil per refuel and more. No leak detected, no smoking. can't seem to find the fault.

When you say a can (500ml) of oil per refuel this is 700-850km?

Sounds rather high.
Any smoke out the exhaust?

Most likely piston ring glands damage, custom problem to these motors, vw **** up somewhere as the 1.4's, 1.6's, 1.8's and 2.0l does them same, most of them on piston no3, even the 5 pot audi 2.5l motor got the same issue,
Piston no1 and 3, it seems to be a software problems, have repaired a couple of motors with this problem and with new forge pistons and software changes, they ran all good

Reported to VW, two oil consumption tests done. Confirmed usage is excessive.
The car is now disabled... valve clamp came undone and valve collapsed. all linked it seems.
Now the fight with VWSA starts.
I would be interested to hear if any other people have experienced same. after a brief internet search there seems to be many others affected, specifically the 1.4 tsi 2013 motors after 60-75000 service.

Yes tons of known failures on them. VW should come to the party as it's not a once of or rare occurance.

i have been having the same problem but they did the oil consumption test and they state theres nothing wrong...my oil like comes on every 11000 km after the service done and when we check it theres no oil in the car, my polo TSI never ever had this issues but VW claims that the car should use up oil.

Enough usage to make the light come on after 11k km is not exactly hugeley excessive. Why don't you make a bit of a habit to check more often and top up instead of waiting for the light to come on(like maybe every second weekend or so)
1l every 1000km is what vw says is acceptable so a litre or two over 11k is not going to make them perk up their ears.

Will this not cause problems with the catalytic converter?

I was so close to buying one of these. Pretty happy I went 1.9 again. Minimal oil usage.

I've also heard 1l/1000km is normal from a vw mech. If that's the case, a 500ml on every tank would be normal or am I missing something?

Shoo, bought my RS3 on 25k km's, now on 66k km's driving it daily does not use a drop of oil, but will surely keep an eye out... interesting...

Could i ask for more information, vehicle details etc from you guys as I am taking this on with the ombudsman. Just forked out 92K for a new motor. Not on!
Please help me out here guys. I need as much info to prove this is a known issue... which we all know it is.

What did VW have to say? Milage on your car? I would have done the ombud / VW customer service route before shelling out R92k. What was the prognosis to force the change?

VWSA only offered 30% on the replacement "out of courtesy... other than that, R62K still doesn't go down too well. I have approached the Ombudsman and am waiting a response. I replaced the motor anyway - cannot have a car lying around for 6 months while at the mercy of others. still need transport.

Hi there I can somewhat relate. I've got a 1.8 TSI DSG Passat 2011 and it's not even getting 1000KM before it asks for oil , I'm currently running the high oil consumption test but does anyone know what's causing this and what's the less costly fix because I can't afford anything that's crazy because I have 2 of these Passats

So a picture is worth a 1000 words.

I had this problem on my 2010 A3 1.8TFSI... It's criminal that the dealerships pretend like there isn't an issue.
I ended up trading my car and took a 30k knock on trade.
I was so disappointed tbh. Lost a lot of faith in the brand.

Reading the replies to this post can send one into immediate panic.

I can confirm the reports of broken ring lands on the 1.4 twincharged engines because I have seen this myself.

@Kabir. I am certainly not suggesting that it is impossible to occur on other engines but I seriously doubt that this is your problem for the reasons below:

1. Your rate of oil consumption is not severe enough to be a broken ring land
2. Your engine is not twincharged so the piston ring land failure is not as common in your engine
3. You would have a loss of compression, misfires and oil-fouled spark plugs

Perhaps have a look on the Audi forum for more info on this issue.

It is common as chips on the 2l . The pistons pictures is from a 2l . I do a lot of them in a year and dealers more. But don't panic. When it starts miss firing you'll know for sure or not. When it does don't keep driving it - then it will cost a lot more to repair.
We put in a forged wossner pistons with slightly lower compression and so far that seems to fix the problem for the future.

...and a rough estimate of cost involved for the replacement of pistons would be how much?

you don't just change the pistons. it's a full rebuild with new chains, tensioners, bearings, gaskets etc etc.
From me - between 40-50 k depending if there was sleeve damage etc.

Eish 1.4tsi problems.....i Kakked a bit when i bought my 1.4tsi twincharged 2012........with its notorious issues of piston failure......

Symptoms start with lumpy idle, misfire, oil usage and then piston number 3 failure......upon more research VW's software update recall did work, but they will they will come up with every excuse not to fix your car once the piston does go boom.

Then even more research with the UK boys and their Twincharged Cupra's having the exact same issues they found a good software upgrade was the answer, So i chatted to Revo and a stage 1 upgrade had everything firing optimally........I did it just as a precaution, and 2 more mates of mine did it on their 1.4tsi motors too. 3 years in and going strong.......but regardless to all i've mentioned here...its a lucky packet motor for sure.
