Caravelle 2.6i (1998) with no spark

Good Day

What could be the problem ?

The car is currently running with a spitronics management, which has been
tested today and it works perfectly. the car starts at some times but at
the moment it only turns without starting "idling"..

it gives no spark at the plugs. and the alarm system has been
disconnected.

Do you get rpm in the mangement when you crank it?

Did you check COIL by the firewall and distributor?...

When mine had same problem and it started out also with starting and then one day at work just swings whole time. We tried new coil, battery, kick start NOTHING! It only turns and no start or idling.
It was the tension pulley.

Very easy to fix or check, Loosen the belt cover, should be ellen-key and Size-10 Spanner. See if belt has tension. Motor might swing but you will find that you do not have enough tension or Spark. Tension pulley sits at bottom. You might need take both covers of to check (easy and can be done over cup of tea) If tension pulley is gone it will also do that.

If so, buy new pulley (+-R80)!
1) While covers are of remove belt from CAM-Gear
2) Open Number Plate flap and unscrew Pulley,..think Size-15
4) Replace Pulley and refit belt
5) Replace Belt Covers back and try start

NB: Why are you using after market Management?...

Say WHAT?. What rensioner are you talking about? Timing belt?

Yeah I don't think that's the issue, also that looks like the auxiliary belt tensioner? It's most likely that the trigger signal pickup hasn't been wired correctly.

That is a multi vee belt tensioner for the fan belt.
If the timing belt rensioner was so loose youndon't get spark becuase rhe dissy is static then the pistons and the valves would also have met up....

Like I said, I had similar problem with 1998 Microbus 2.6i.

Mine was the tension pulley when you remove the lower cover on side motor by number plate flap, it jockeys the belt going over the cam gear. It was completely stuffed and tension on belt NULL. The motor turned everything but could not start. Had no almost no spark to the coil as I swapped that around. After trying COIL, battery etc., I open the covers on the side to check the belt tension and found that pulley stuffed. Changed that and problem was solved.

Guy asked what could be the problem,..worth checking that as easy to check

And you just changed the pulley and off it went. Amazing. So no damage to valves, you didn't need to change the cambelt and re-do the valve timing nothing?

NOPE nothing,..
Drove to work with it one Friday, after work did not wanna start.
Tried kick start nothing.
Left BUS at work as it was secure underground parking.
Came back Saturday with another battery, still nothing. Went get COIL, nothing! Open oil cap see if cam turning-yes cam turns as I thought the belt might snappped, just could not get to start.
Left again and left BUS for about a week till next Saturday to try figure out what was wrong or asked advise.
The next weekend we opened the side covers and found tension stuffed,..
Went to the guy that sells VW parts opposite VW in MOOI Street and got new tensioner, fitted and BUS started no problem.


Drove the Microbus for 10 years and was my brothers prior and sold it just over 2-years ago for i10....eish :bang: :bang:
(That was only major issue I ever had with it and the water pump)

I think those 5-cylinder Microbus engines (2.3, 2.5 and 2.6) are relatively low compression and may actually be "free runners", i.e. have sufficient clearance between open valves and pistons at TDC.

But that still doesn't explain how simply renewing the tensioner pulley automatically synchronises valve timing. I there's no spark, the dissy isn't turning. Which means the valvetrain or auxiliary shaft (if ever there is one) isn't turning either. So the whole cambelt train would be completely out of sync. I'm with you, if we're indeed talking about the cambelt tensioner here, it sounds very implausible.
