VW GOLF 4 2.0 Engine mods - cam/chip

Post by golfer23 »

Good day folks.....

So i'm looking at going a bit faster with my 85kw golf.
03 Golf 4 2.0 - APK engine.

Was looking at a 270d cam, vernier and a chip.

The questions:
what would i look at for the costs of doing the above?
what would the petrol damages be? drastic or not so bad?
what else would i need to change?
will the engine internals be good? and then gearbox? i know i need to put in a new clutch and pressure plate as so as cash says i can.

A vernier pully won't give you any increases on power, all it is is a fine tuning tool for cam timing. And to be honest I can't see you getting 12 kw from chip tuning alone on a NA car. Chip tuning isn't the same in NA as it is in forced induction, on turbo cars you can pull timing and increase boost and fuel to increase power, but on a NA car there isn't much to do. Chip tuning in NA cars is for when you fit a bigger cam and flow the head for example, the ECU would need the fueling and timing to be set to best accentuate the mods done to the engine, then you'll see an increase in power.

You could fit a 276 and get it chipped and set up for the cam, should see a few kw's, you can also fit a k&n filter to get one or two extra kw's. Fuel economy is more dependent on the driver than anything else. I wouldn't worry too much about it, if anything you might see one or two km's less per litre. And don't worry about gearbox or clutch problems, the slight increase in power won't do anything to the internals or drivetrain.

There is a guy on the forum that can set you up with estas cams, I am not sure about the price currently but it was around R1560.00 last time I saw. It is also good practice to replace the lifters if another cam shaft is fitted, a set of lifters go for around R400.

Isn't the 2.0 motor in the golf 4/jetta 4 the normal ABA crossflow motor?

Edit: read like a tottie. Yeah man your **** out of luck, not much you can do with that motor.

I am just thinking even after spending all the money to try and get your Golf 4 faster, you will be disappointed because that body is heavy.

2L 8V Turbo like that epic Mk4 2l8VT on the forum. That makes up for the weight very nicely.

Wait is APK normal 8v xflow format or same as the polo motors? If it's the normal 8v format then all I said still applies

Please pardon my ignorance; is the APK "drive by wire" or not? If not then the "usual" 8v cams would be OK.

They are shortblock, internal water pump, chain driven oil pump, drive by cable 8v cross flow motors BUT the cylinder head has 5 cam bearings unlike usual 8v's that have only the 4. Most aftermarket cams will have the journals correct but a lot of factory cams will not.

As having modified this motor I can tell you it is as strong as the older 8v's BUT you would be better off swapping it out for a 1.8t or VR6 or putting an ABF/KR 16v head onto it or like I did go straight for turbo.
