Lumpy - '84 MK1 GTS shop project

Postby Sly_Dub » Mon Apr 18, 2016 12:58 pm

When Sean and I opened Solid Racingg Developments we finally had the opportunity to take ownership of a mk1 we had been eyeing for quite some time.

This particular mk1 belonged to Sean's brother who didn't take the best care of her and left her to stand outside in rain and sun for about 4 years.

We decided this specimen needs to be saved!

The day we paid for the car we got cracking and got it towed to the shop.

From there she got a decent wash and polish to see the condition of the paint, although the one fender is rusted through the rest of the rust is purely surface.

Image

Decided to cut off the tow-bar, temporarily lower the golf while its standing and assemble so it atleast looks decent.

Image

We then end up with this!

Image

We have also acquired a little something for the build in the time being!
We have removed the stock 1600 motor which had popped to be replaced by an 1800 8v with a large amount of tinkering to be done!

Image

It is going to be a slow build as budget allows but we are planning a complete but and bolt, from the ground up build.
The plan is to make it Oem+, so a sandblast and respray in the same yellow, interior re-upholstered in the same color and similar material but with bigger Oem wheels, low and a grunty side-draught motor!

Not too sure to be honest, it actually didn't have a carb on when we got it. It had a brand new keihin carb in the boot. Definitely not what we want to use lol.

A set of 40mm Webers with less than 4000km sounded a lot better

Having had a silver 1983 Mk1 GTS in our family since 1987, to this day, of which I drove it from 1992 to 2005, I have a really soft spot for these cars. We've always tried to maintain it in good running condition, even if it wasn't perfect. Here are a few pics of 2004 - obviously it's seen 12 more years since then, and many of its years it's spent outside, as a student's car, but it's still in good overall nick.

How I would love to see one of them restored to its former glory! No lower-faster-louder, just a respectful restoration of what it once was.

But this is probably the wrong forum for originality enthusiasts... Still, I'll be watching this thread with interest.

dazza, the stock engine was an FR with a Solex (Pierburg) 2B5 carb, delivering, IIRC, about 65 kW. 1781 cc, mechanical tappets. It was very nimble, as long as the carb worked properly, but there lies the problem. The carbs didn't last forever, and weren't easy to repair either. I ended up replacing mine with a Keihin (from Goldwagen, for the HM engine), basically a straight plug&play. I don't know which gearbox was on there, but ours still shifts very nicely (except synchromesh on 1st gear, which is worn) after nearly 400k km.

Ahh OK I have the KS2 on my 87 Citi, the carb was recently serviced and the car runs like a dream. The only issue is that the bolt that screws the airbox into the top of the carb is not great as the threads in the carb are worn

dazza, I had the same problem with the Keihin on my Fox. A mechanic friend of mine gave me a type of threaded sleeve (not sure whether it's a Helicoil or something different), which I installed some time ago, and up to now, it works fine. IIRC, one has to drill a hole of the correct diameter, and the actual sleeve is self-threading. If you want, I can ask him what part exactly it is, and where to get it.

OP: sorry for OT.

Here is a pic of the carb, it is brand new never been used. It's from Goldwagen so not too sure if it's a ks2.

I recently bought another KS2 carb so I have a spare. Don't mind having a second spare so let me know if it is in fact a KS2 and we can talk price.
The one you posted looks like a KS2 from what I can see

It is with sadness that I announce Lumpy has been sold, after a generous offer and a tight financial situation she has found a new home...

The new owner seems to be as much of an enthusiast as the rest of us and I will do my best to get some pics of the car completed and running!
