Seat Ibiza Cupra tdi OVERHEATING

Post by Eddels »

Hi Guys

Need some advice.

My tdi recently start to overheat.

Fans wont kick.
Replaced both fans with spares one i had(i pinned them out on low and high speed they are working)
New thermo switch
new temp sensor
tried 2 different thermostats

Lastly what i did is
Removed the thermostat
Replaced waterpump last night old one looks still new(Did not drive the car yet but i still dont see any water running through the small returning line to the water bottle)
Also see the heater is not working

Could this be a block somewhere in the system?? or headgasket failing? does not seem to lose water until it boils and push the water out

Not sure if it could be a similar story to my s3.. I think the Cupra has the auxiliary water pump!?

After my rebuild this damn pump wasn't pushing water through as it had an airlock... We force water into it and it started pumping again...

Just getting at this: there might be an airlock.

Panic i did change the waterbottle plus CAP.

Dougi i did swap the motor yes and was running for like 500km fine without issues. Also running a GTB2260 now.

So what i tried yesterday. put both new thermostats in boiling water and check which one opened first. Used a thermo gun to see the water temp was just above 90 when the one opened. I made a 3mm hole in the thermostat heard from guys this helps.

I flushed every pipe and then bleed the system seems there was so much air.

Drove the car. Plugged in VCDS to get a accurate reading. At first the temps went to 110 and then just dropped to 92 again. then it will climb to 110 and then drop again fast.

After the drive i felt the waterpipe is rock solid hard(Might be gasses in the system) and then i went for a second drive temps looks better pipes was soft again. i left the car idling for a few minutes and the FANS also kicked in.

So next step will be testing headgasket for leaks and then torque the head again. Seems like many people had luck just to torque the head again.

sounds like an air lock, run the car till the thermostat opens with the water bottle cap off.

Make sure you switch on the heater in your car so the water runs through it.

I wouldn't go to the extreme of re-torquing the headbolts. If you didn't remove it, don't do that yet.

Is the EGR system still in place? It could be something as simple as the EGR cooler has a crack in it and is letting exhaust gas into the cooling system.

Mods: Racepipe, egr delete, gtb2260, straight pipe, fmic, running 1.5bar currently. Even though the afr is 15 and durations adjusted dont get much smoke. I suspect they installed smaller injectors and headstuds. I have to get the injectors part numbers. I was boosting 2bar and had a leak so turned it back to 1.5

Yeah mate, sorry for that - could have told you that one. I am in the same boat with my "new" motor in my Polo TDI. It's a rough one. Did you have excessive pressure in your coolant bottle even with the car standing overnight? Mine has been doing that, but the telltale sign for me was when I found soot in my waterbottle.

+1 on giving the headbolts a little turn. That has proven to fix a tonne of people's issues in the past. I would do it also, but I have already bought all the bolts and headgasket kit. Let me know how you come along.

Jip seems like it holds the pressure. the waterpipe was so hard the other night then i knew time for headgasket test

Ill keep you guys up to date. will torque them soon and also see what injectors is in the car. She still pulling strong though but parked her off when i knew its leaking.

I might do the headgasket and ARP bolts after the retorque did not work. Please let me know about yours?

Could be a few things

Map sensor faulty
Vacuum leak
Vacuum box faulty

But what i will suggest is take the car back to the guy who reconned the turbo because the stopper\actuator could not be set right and that why you car is not boosting or boosting late.

Does it boost at all?
