Help please_MP9 error, and heavy on juice
Hi guys, after changing back to the 1.4i motor, I drove the car to Roodepoort to gave my uncle flash the ECU for the 1.4 map. The car got 8km/l before the flash (i.e. running on the 2.0 map).
I filled up the car after I got back home from Roodepoort. I have now done about 175km, and the tank is between 1/2 and 3/4
I used to drive about 180km before the needle started dropping! Titliest (Guillaume) scanned my car for errors (thanks meneer ), and it showed this the first time:

Can anybody please explain to me why my car is so extremely heavy on petrol??? It's driving me mad. My uncle said that all the ECU's give that engine fault when you re-chip them?
Please help I'll check tonight for any physical leaks... The water temp sender works 100%.

Did you clear the errors and check again after a drive

We didn't drive the car, but we did rev it up, switch it off, started it up, revved it a little bit more etc... The water temp sender was picking up nicely up till about 95degC, then the fan kicked in. I didn't check the readings for the MAP sensor though. I'll take it out and clean it with some carb cleaner maybe? The car runs very poorly when you unplug the map sensor. I can't for the live of me remember now but IIRC the MP has the biggisg Water temp sensor on/near the head the 4 pin one .. one for the management sestem the other for the temp guage.. IIRC the fan gets switched on by a seperate switch/sensor on the actual radiator. So just because the fan came on doesn't mean that the water temp sensor is working.. get a Ohm meter and measure the resistance over both sets of pins...

Thanks for the advice Joggie, I checked the temperature on VAG-COM, and it climbed up to 95deg from 75. I don't know if VAG-COM reads the temp off the clusters' pins, or off the ECU's, but it would seem than it is the MAP sensor that's faulty. Does anybody know how much a new one costs? I'll clean it and test the resistance when revving the car to see if it changes? And I'll also check the water temp sender's pins readings.

I checked my readings with my Ohm-meter tonight. Compared the values with Irfaan's golf... On the temp sender, I get the following readings over the two sets of pins:
"Left side" (thicker Brown and yellow/red) = 0.19 to 0.26, depending on the engine temp.
"Right side" (the other two wires LOL) = starts at 1.5Ohm, and climbs up to over 3, and still goes....
Irfaan's car was the same temp as mine, and I got the following readings over the same two sets of pins:
"Left side" = 0.19 to 0.22, depending on the engine temp. (So that is okay)
"Right side" = stays at +-0.39Ohm....
Map sensor readings were about the same too...
So I'm thinking the Water temp sender has failed... After 2 months!!!!

My sensor shows up normal on the dash temp gauge, and it picked up the temps on the VAG-COM correctly, but my voltmeter says differently. I'm getting about 10 times more resistance than I should be getting on my temp sender. Buy a voltmeter (+-R80), and check your voltages across the two sets of pins dude, it's worth a shot.Benitovw wrote:Sorry for the hijack.

the resistance on the temp sender should be in the kilo-ohm range. But any issue here should have been seen in the vag.com tamperature readings.
Pull out the plugs and see if the car is running rich, if it is then more faultfinding is required.

Water temp sensor is cheap enough to simply replace and see... the readings according to me should be similar.

Guys i am getting the same issues with my 1.4 velociti. I get the same millage per litre as well. I changed the temp switch, i checked the timing, i did a vagcom scan and checked for leaks on the exhaust. All yielded nothing. I am going to check my spark plugs, perhaps the gapping is wrong on them. Maybe this is what you could also check scatman. Please keep me informed if you come across anything else i can check and i will do the same.

I plugged the temp sender out this morning and tried to start the car. It just kept on swinging and almost wanted to start. i then plugged the temp sender in again, and she fired up instantly. I let the car warm up slightly, then unplugged the temp sender again, the revs dropped by probably 100rpm at that point. I drive the car to work (15km), and the fuel gauge stayed where it was when I left home, so I can speculatively say that the fueling is much better. Yes, the values are not corresponding with Irfaan's car's readings. His values stay the same, whereas my one set of pins climbs in resistance to way over 3.0... Irfaan's reading was pretty constant at 0.39... The issue is that the GW ones are such kak quality, this temp sender lasted me 2 months!!! And VW wants R480 for a OEM temp sender. I'd say check the resistance on your MAP sensor, mine fluctuates and changes as the revs pick up and drop down? The ECU uses the readings from the MAP sensor and the water temp gauge and distributor to add the correct fuel amount. My uncle (Shaun from SRD's dad) loaded the map for me. it is not coded to my key/immobiliser. I phoned my uncle and he said that all the chipped ECU's give that error? Or is he wrong? Spark plug gapp by it self will not make such a bigg diffrence in fuel consumption. Sorry buy you are barking up the wrong tree. Dodgy spark plug with cause all types of missfires and loss of power on and off but not what you guys have been decribing.ahmedy wrote: All yielded nothing. As with any car start with the basics.. Fuel,spark and timing.. If it's over fueling chances are it's the Map or the Water temp sensor.. if it's grossly overfuelling be carefull of bore wash and change the oil if it smells like fuel !

Timing is important for power not economy directly but indirectly .. what I neam here is that if the car isn't making the power it sould you might dive it harder to keep up with traffic and in doing so use more fuel.

I seem to be having a similar problem but on a 2lt.
the car idle is not smooth and sounds as if it is hunting. when driving it has a miss.
Changed the temp sensor and still persist. also tried connecting to vagcom but the one we used was having connection errors.
