I am busy getting some stuff together to detail my ride.

The buff machine i'll be using is a Makita with adjustbable speeds.

What speed setting should i use when buffing?

should i press the machine hard against the car or should i let it glide across the car.

i've buffed the car b4 using a high speed and pressed very hard, ended up burning the clearcoat in some areas and added a whole lot of swirls.

would like to fix this and do it right this time round.

any help will be appreciated.

With my DA I used the following settings

Swirl removal - speed setting 4 to 5, with about 5kg to 10kg of downward pressure
Glazing - speed setting 3 to 4, with about 5kg to 10kg of downward pressure but on the last 2 passes, only the weight of the machine
Wax/sealant application - speed setting 3, only the weight of the machine

Your last question worries me
Rather get an old panel and practice for a while before you decide to do some serious damage to you paintwork.
OR
Pay someone in the know to do it for you and then its up to you to maintain that finish.

I've never used a machine on my car just in case i f*ck it up...IMO the paintwork still looks awesome after 8yrs. Still has the orange peel effect and the colour is deep and glossy.

I'm using the Autoglym SRP and Autoglym extra gloss protection (sealant).

i would like to do this myself, so some help would be appreciated. what type of buffing pads should i get? my paintwork is in quite a sorry state. dull and full of scratches. the roof is also starting to fade.

i initially wanted to pay sum1 to do it for me so i though, stuff it, i'll read up on the whole detailing process and try an do it myself.

I like sticking to one brand...and from my experience with Autoglym, the results are alway excellent.

i know you told me its in cavendish square, but what the name of the place and price?

need to get some stuff together.

anyhoo, there so many stuff on the market i dont know what to get. the easiest i can get would be megs products. but after having a look at the prices of stuff on crazy detailer, i might as well order the whole katoot from them.

Nope, an orange Lake country pad for swirl removal, the green one for glazing and a cheap ass one that came with my shield da for applying wax. You can go read my rides thread... I posted up a full write up on the detailing I did last weekend on my polo.

I think it will be pretty hard to **** your paint up with a DA polisher. And you will honestly be surprised at how much better your paint will look once done

and as for the orange peel effect, from what I understand this is not something you want, as it will distort the reflection of light off you paint thereby decreasing the mirror effect/shine?

+1 to what onyx said,

With a rotary research then practice on a scrap panel. Rotary has a learning curve and it takes time to master with different pads and products. Once you get it it becomes easier .... Product and pads and backing plates also make big difference when buffing with a rotary some products dust really bad so it helps to do your homework 1st.

1, About 70% of your machines maximum speed.
2, Little force, about 3 kg.
3, Try not to keep the machine at one spot, move it side ways.
4, Do a panel at a time.

really keen to take my detailing to the next step , also scared of machines but cant get the swirls out by hand .. I just dont understand how you know what force you are appling ?? dont even think ill be able to apply that much just curious - is it something that you can feel more once you are busy operating the machine ?
