Best Oil for high milage

Post by naidup »

Howzit guys...

Whats the best oil for a high mileage engine(340 000kms)? -normal 8v motor.

I've tried Shell Helix HX3 and it worked fine but is very noisey on cold start, tried magnetec and motor was silent thou oil consumption was higher.

Any other good oils? Shell Helix HX5 -15w40?
Let's hear what you guys use.

Thanks in advance

There is a shell helix marked on the can "for high mileage motors" but I can't remember the name.

Rather buy a good quality part that will last then buying a cheap part that won't last.

Wouldn't that oil make it more noisey as it's much thicker? Would the 15w40 not be better?

I heard that stuff is very bad for lifter and oil pumps due to it getting way to thick

So did I.

Went to GW PMB and the guy sold me Shell Helix HX5 15w40- says it's a better oil.
Will it not be too thin for the high mileage?

Last time i used this oil i had to change my oil pump due to bad oil pressure.

Last year on my MK2 Jetta I used Shell Helix HX3 20w50 and found it very noisy on start up as well as using half a pint of oil every week.

This year started using Shell Helix HX5 15w40 and found it to be much more quiet, a small improvement in fuel consumption and uses half a pint of oil every 2 weeks.

Next week my car is going in for an oil service, going to try Shell Helix HX7 10w40 and see how it goes.

The 15W40 is not " a better oil" it just has a different viscosity than the 25W60. I would use the Helix 25W60 or Castrol high mileage 20W50 as the problem you are having is the so called "thinner" oil is being burnt up due to it leaking through oil seals and increasing oil consumption.

If the motor is using oil, use a thicker viscosity.

I used Shell, 20w50 back when I had my Audi 500, with 417,XXX kilos on original engine, and it ran smooth and quiet, allthough using about 0.5l per 1000 kilos...

Another thing that worries me is that with Shell HX3(20w50)is the topup pints in the tin say HX3 but SAE40. I did notice the car does give out a bigger puff of smoke with HX3 oil(i know, i know-valve stem seals are worn). Isn't 25w60 going to be even nosier on start up due to it being thicker?

Just curious.

Dude that noise if it will be there at start up is something you will have to live with. You say your valve stem seals are worn, you are trying to put a plaster on a a stab wound. Oils are not developed to stop cars from smoking they are developed to lubricate moving parts so you not going to find this optimum oil that will stop your car from smoking.

Re: Best Oil for high milage

I know i need to do the motor but just don't have the time right now to get it done with Christmas etc. so I'm looking for a reasonably good oil to prevent further wear. besides put it on a dyno not too long ago to check for any power loss and it's just as strong as any other 1.4i. Gonna change the gearbox oil too(BOT130M).

Maybe I'll just try the Shell Helix HX5K-High Mileage and get it done with for now.

One more thing...
Will the 25w60 oil not be too thick and cause the oil pump to struggle causing problems on cold start?

When your motor is bleeding oil out from worn main and big ends a thicker oil is better for the pump to build some pressure...

I read a few years back on the net that its not advisable to change oils from fully synthetic to regular oil unless you 1st do a engine flush. You could damage your seals by doing that because the 1 expand the seals and the other shrink the seals.
