TDI battles to start after trips *Camshaft Position Sensor*

I got my vag-com cable and software and ran an auto diagnostic. No water temp sensor errors came up, but these came up:

Faulty camshaft position sensor. Replace it then it should be fine.

So I just replaced the cam position sensor. It's been starting fine since, but I will monitor it for the next couple of days just to make sure and I've cleared the error codes so will also scan it in a few days again to see if the errors are back or not.

I also bought a water coolant sensor they lank cheap so will replace it this evening after the engine has cooled down a bit and hopefully that will solve the problem where he water temp light comes on sometimes.

Seems that after replacing the camshaft sensor it solved my starting problem. And my temp light doesnt come on anymore after replacing the water coolant sensor.
Vag-com is a must it saved me alot of money by diagnosing the car and replacing the camshaft sensor myself... oh and of course help from the guys on the forum.

The g40 will be no 1 cyl tdc ref.
The car wont go to batch injection on the new cars.
It will affect starting etc and wont control knock that well.
If this is on a tdi replace the unit as it will give you issues big time latter.It sits behind the cam pully so you need to remove the belt etc to get to it.

If what you say is true, prusink, I've got a problem. We have a customer that came in yesterday whose car has an intermittent cam position sensor code 'open or short to ground circuit' for a BEW. The VCDS/ Engine module/ Block 4 reading for the cam position is set at +.5. However, when the code pops up, the cam position sensor defaults to 0.0.

If the cam sensor means nothing after the car starts, try unplugging the cam sensor while the car is running... car dies.

I believe the cam position sensor is CONSTANTLY reading the cam position, just like it's reading the injector balance; from idle clear through maximum rpm. If your cam sensor is giving a 'no read', I am sure you will be losing substantial fuel economy.

As for removing the sensor, first be aware that the 'no read' may have to do with a Service Bulletin that concerns the ground wire for the cam sensor. The wire may not be grounding correctly. The fix is to cut the ground wire and attach it to an access point close to the plug-in. There is a bolt that we attach the wire to that holds the water pipe across the front of the block.

If you choose to remove the sensor, you have to remove the timing belt, pulley, and some screws that hold the timing belt backing plate to the cylinder head. It's very close to remove the cam sensor, but it's doable. Make sure the sensor is bad before you bother taking it out. They don't often fail.

The other thing to check is that the 'fingers' of the cam sensor wheel are not bent. If you have erratic distances between the cam sensor and the fingers, you can get a bad read.

The wiring could be bad, the camshaft position sensor could be bad, or its plug not seated. "Implausible signal" simply means its not being read and "intermittent" means just that, its sporadic. Try unplugging the sensor connector and plugging it in again. If that does not fix it, you're next step is either to replace the camshaft position sensor (if its not too expensive and fairly easy), or check for continuity from the sensor plug to the ECU, bearing in mind that even if the wiring shows continuity, there still could be a break. Wiggle the wiring while doing the continuity check to make sure its not intermittent.

Remove timing belt cover, look slightly below and to the right of the cam pulley. Remove the one bolt fastening the sensor in place. Pop out the rubber plug in the backing plate, unclip the wire from the harness holder and disconnect the plug. Fish the sensor wire and plug thru the hole in the backing plate.

Fwiw the rubber plug can become dried out, brittle and break. Order a new one to be safe, part # is 1e0971904 .

that's what it looked to me, having an intermittent error with my camshaft sensor too. I did find out that if you clean the surface of it , the error goes away.

Sorry for the delay, here are some pics taken with my phone.
This is where the sensor plugs in on the right side of the engine, the dark black cable is the new sensor cable.

It runs in next to that rubber cap the cap needs to be romeved to fit the plug through the plastic cover that is around the camshaft and belt.

To the left of the cambelt under the pully is the sensor it is held on with a size 10 bolt.

Thanks for that! Did you have to remove the cam belt to get to the sensor?

Nope left the belt on but used u sockect with an extender arm to get to the bolt holding it

Just wanted to say thanks guys. I have been battling with this for a VERY long time! Just ordered the replacement sensor from VW today, it cost R1100! Oh well, hope it resolves my issue too! Seeing as there are fellow owners here, who has the highest mileage amongst us here? Reason I am asking is, my car is doing 183000kms and I have 2 years left to free the car, so I was wondering if its worth keeping? I love this car but DAMN if its reaching its lifespan.....

Reason I am asking is, my car is doing 183000kms and I have 2 years left to free the car, so I was wondering if its worth keeping? I love this car but DAMN if its reaching its lifespan.....

My Polo is 8 and a half years old with 208500km on the clock... and it is still running like it did the day it left the factory. It returns excellent fuel economy and it will still run with some of the best.

I don't quite know how long you want its lifespan to be but I am expecting at least another 200000km!

vw charged me R2600 to replace the cam positioning sensor on my 2007 jetta tdi. this was roughly 2.5 years ago. it solve the warm start problem, but fuel economy was terrible thereafter. took it back but they couldn't sort it out.

So eventually got round to doing this, thanks for the guide it defiantly helped. It did take me a lot longer than 30mins though, but it was expected, as i have never worked in an engine bay

By the looks of things, it has seemed to have solved the warm start issues, and random loss of power.

Now i need to get onto the thermostat, as i am experiencing the same issues as most of the guys. i.e temp gauge never gets to 90.

I started my car in the mornings or even when standing for maybe more than 3 hours. No problems. As soon as i start making a few stops or even when driving on high way my car just dies. None as if it runs out of diesel. Then i have to turn ignition of and on while driving then suddenly i can go again. Even sometimes when idling my car dies. No one could help me. One guy telling me about the turbo and another about the injectors. Others about the carbon Built up i got so frustrated until i took matters into my own hands and realized that either no one wants to help me or they are trying to make money of me. But at the end of a journey of spending over 15k i realized that it was the cam position sensor all along.
