1.8 20v turbo in golf 1

Post by CRASH_IT »

Hey guys

This is my plan, been running through all the ideas of what to do to my Cabby for some time nw, from 8v monster, abf, 8v turbo, 16 valve turbo but think Im going wit a 1.8 20v turbo transplant.

I know it gonna cost a arm and half my left toe but in the long run I think Im gonna be all smiles.

What I want to know is
1. Which engine code has the strongest internals, and responds well to mods.
2. Do these motors fit well into the engine bay, not worried about the mounts but firewall etc getting in the way.
3. Will my 1.8 flywheel fit and more importantly work.
4. I want to use dicktator on this, but any recommendation on management will be a help, I want it to run as smooth as possible.
5. Anything that I might need to look out or info on this plan please send me the more info I have the more I can plan better and have this 100%
6. Any pics of your transplants will be a help to.
7. Were should I start looking for a gd used motor.

Thanks guys

Sorry ran a search for this but did't find the info Im looking for.

I had a look at this option a while back, but these motors were still so expensive. You need to look out for an early 1.8T motor as the newer ones were all drive by wire,(cant remember the engine code.)

Yeah they are still very expensive, weighed up doing a 16v turbo and this is very expensive also if done properly. I've done a 16v turbo into my G2 so it also a new project and a bit of uniqueness. Looking at running a straight stock 1.8t 20v obviously with the exception zorst pipe, intake, fmic. Turbo will remain stock for nw unless I find a T28 or sorts in the pipe line but no wild 8 Bar boost just yet. :driving:

The S3 and TT motors have stronger internals, but the "less stronger" ones are good for 300whp. You will pay much more for a S3 or TT motor.

CRASH_IT wrote: 2. Do these motors fit well into the engine bay, not worried about the mounts but firewall etc getting in the way.
Yes

CRASH_IT wrote: 3. Will my 1.8 flywheel fit and more importantly work.
Yes, but you will have to look at a copper clutch at some stage. Depending on hoe you drvie the gearbox might also not last long.

You will need a Wasted Spart system as it does not have a dizzy and runs coilpacks. There are toher options, but they involve a lot of customising.

Not a standard 1.8, but still a 20v....

Everywhere. They are not found easily without paying a premium. Get ready for R15k - R20k for a motor, except if you are lucky.

As long as they gd for 300, Im not looking for a huge amount I mean with a few std mods and with it in a G1 body it will still give a great lashing. maybe much later on Will look at 300kw but then I will most def be pulling it apart for some decent internal parts.

Yes most def a stronger one but not copper, I still want a drivable cabby, I had a copper in my G2 2.0 16v t wasn't there long
Gearbox: What could I replace my gbox with? I really am light on my current gbox, No hash launches, more roll on starts.

yes am aware of the coil packs.

I also had a copper clutch in for a while, it sucked. Your other option will then be to go cable shift with the ABF flywheel / VR6 clutch, works a charm, holding 300whp no problem.

You can see my build and progress here: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2934918

I'm very happy with my setup, only running 0.3bar until the new motor is settled nicely. I also had a G4 GTi which I was very happy with, no 16v, so you might consider my opinion biased, but I love 20v motors.

I see you running a Dizzy on your 20v?

What do I need on the electronics side eg Coil Packs? Senses? Any control units? I want to try push that I buy as much complete motor as they permit me so I dont have to fork out extra cash on coil packs for example. make me a deal and all and all! lol

Yes, I did it as I wanted to run the MSD 6A I had, it was wasted spark before the rebuild. Wasted spark MSD cost an arm and a leg.

If you plan to run Dicktator or what ever (local) wasted spark system you will need either the coilpacks on the head or you will need to buy a wasted spark coilpack like sold by Spitronics. Then you need the magnetic crank pick-up on the block, which will be sitting at the trigger wheel on the crank (near back of motor). You also need to get most of the pipe fittings on the head/block as they can be quite expensive.

Yo Yo Yo that link was great my man, Some serious blood and sweat went into your cabby and the results show every bit of hard work done. A huge big up and praise.

I haven't owned a 20v, but have done enough research to know the guys are def happy with them and know they are pretty strong built! Ok so the Coil pack wires straight into the ECU.
Cool

I also noticed you have used stock 8v pistons and a 8v block attached, Are the ones in the 20v semi forged bits of sorts? Hw much different are the two blocks. Im currently running 1.8i 8v so can I bolt all the bits to my block?
Will save me on a police clearance!

Big applause to your cabby once again, a job well done!

I have a 2E long block and the intake manifold used to touch the bonnet sometimes, but stiffer engine mounts solved that

Thanks, it's not yet done, but is it ever?

Have a look here: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1674618

The head will go onto the 1.8 8v block, but you will need to make a few changes, refer to the link above.

Oh Ok, yo so much info to absorb brain over load. hahaha

I think my best option will be bolting the entire 20v motor in, Then I know everything is in there to work with each other and OEM.
What pistons are in the 20vT Motors? Are they normal or have some treatment done to them.

Let the Engine Sourcing begin!!!!

I will post the progress as soon as I start.

Good choice, it's much less hassle and saves time trying to source everything.

Some say the pistons are forged, some say semi-forged, but they are good for 400whp. People in the states just swop the rods for forged ones, but leave the std pistons for some big numbers.
