speak to me about u-flow 8v's and ITB's

Post by sixteen10 »

ok so here's the scenario.

shortblock 8v u-flow , flowed and ported head , valves , 288 cam ,vernier pulley and full exhaust.

What ITB setup and why, I assume it would be a 40mm setup with custom built ram tubes to face forward.

Also what kind of filters would i need , and would I need a plenum chamber?

Plenum chamber negates what you want to achieve by using throttles. You don't say what size bottom end but I assume 2L. Yes 40/42 would be nice - 45 too big. You can also run a 298 cam on a 2l.

Hey grant..

I'd say go for a 298 cam and 40mm ITB's you can get nice ones off a jet skii some mikuni's i think, they also come on the kawasaki's - they are relatively cheap. R800 or so..

I've seen a track car, where a guy crafted out of s/steel or aluminuim (not sure) a sort of ducting running from a hole in the fender (where mp9 airbox is) taking a bend right past block/tappet cover - to direct colder air over his itbs on a u-flow

Yeah those come in 43mm and 45mm.

Grant im planning on doing the same next ear sometime. So Listening intently.

Just run straight ramtubes, im sure a bend in them is gonna cause issues. There's enough air back there I reckon. Not a lot of space though.

Thanks , the car will more than likely remain a daily driver so that is why i never considered the 298 , yes i know throttles aren't ideal on a daily.
So i'm thinking going 40mm ITB's with longest possible ram tubes and the aboves setup on the head.
Anyone got any negative parts to point out apart fromthe obvious that the ITB's will be facing the firewall.

@ solo , thanks man , if you can get a picture that would be tops? :)

@ roadhawg , cool man , i've seen a few guys that make use of custom ram tubes facing the front of the engine bay and i gotta admit it does look the part :D

Anyone know the gent that had the maroon / black mk1 , 1.8i on ITB's. apparantly that was a u flow on ITB's and on MP9. does he post here?

@ SHAUN , who's car is that?

Another thing is what filters will i use on the ITB's?

Hi

Not to put you off or anything. Are you doing this just for the sound of the throttles or planning on getting nice power figures out? Reason I'm asking is that I spent a nice sum of cash on throttles for my 8v u-flow and the power figures were disappointing. For all the work involved, its not worth the money spent. Both Sarel and I tired everything to get the power up but we not successful. My setup was 2.0l 8v flowed head with 298 cam and 40mm DICE throttles, car made 125hp and 154nm of torque. We then built a 2.1 motor and the power figures were not very impressive either. Now I slapped on a flowed MP9 intake and the power jumped up to 135hp and 175 nm of torque. Car was dynoed @ KAR. With more testing ie ( different Intake lengths etc) I'm sure we can get the power up but its not really worth the effort. Look my car sounded awesome but I was after power so had to compromise.

Just my 2c.

Dont use filters, they rob u of power. A guy in my town built a 2.0 short block i think 8v uflow, 298 cam with 40 or 43 itbs. It made 103wkw.

u can use bike individual k&n's or sock filters. My drag car i have stockings over my ramtubes, and at raceday, i remove them. Even they rob enough power, that i feel the diffrence.

If he plans to use it as a daily drive car then i Suggest filters would be a good thing!
Dave Ingle sells some very nice slim line filters

If you leave those ram tubes open, then a sh!t load of dirt is going to get sucked into the engine and thats definately going to cause k@K..

I suppose its fine on a drag car that only sees 1/4 mile - definately not on a daily car IMHO

Its true. At full tilt, my throttles suck damn hard. Parents aside the road have to hold their small children, else, wel. In they go. Lol. Ja. I use stocking 2 prevent big shite going in, when i take car round the block, etc

I have a 16v motor I am working on and imo 16v is just a better investment than doing a 8v uflow motor

good point.especially when u gonna spend so much money on an 8valve anyways.16valve maybe more expensive to maintain though(i might be wrong).

Just wish i had foto's of everything but can get the dyno sheets for u but here goes.

One guy has a 1.8l 82.5mm piston head flow and 300deg cam 43mm rsi with socks and short dave ram tubes no space for long one's rowland intake and 300cc injectors in mk1 2door making 104kw and 176nm on the fly did a 15.6 with spinning on semi's 1st and part of 2nd

Then next is with foto's a 2e running u-flow Bigger valves 3angel grinedid swirled, 288, ported and polished rowland intake and he rather used the std rsi ramtubes turned uround to get cool air away from exh running 14.6s making 110.7kw and 202nm on the same dyno tech dyno

Image
And get pipe like this to get cold air from bumper to throttels
Image

And some picks of custom intake made for 43mm throttels

Image

Image

Then a 1.8l std with 276 billet and big valve and flow with ady intake making 100kw and 172nm?
no throttels and good power hey but not at the 200nm u get with 2e ?

Then for interest sake a 2l16v std with branch and grinded 272 cams no flow nothing just gotech making 118kw and 182nm?
Image
Get a 16v and start at the modifyed 2l8v output  :bang:   :hi:

Hi guys...

I know this is an extremely old thread...and yes these things are rarely done these days BUT how the hell do I get to mount the OEM Toyota throttle linkage without getting in the way of the fuel rail or ram tubes????
