Re: Potent Citi 1.6i
AFX is the usual 1.6i Polo/Citi block. Probably cam and exhaust and possibly chip. If he was feeling rich some headwork, flowing/porting.

I will ask the guy because i am highly impressed with the performance. I am almost sure it will drop most 2.0 8v's

Re: Potent Citi 1.6i
cam , exhaust , headwork , vernier pulley and unichip see's those 1.6i's making mid to high 90 wheel horsepowers at KAR. my mild 2.0i 8v makes around 104-106 horses.
They respond VERY well to small mods, and by making a heap less torque lower down they're awesome to launch.
would love to experiment by building an AFX sub assembly with a 16v head.

Re: Potent Citi 1.6i
I have a 1.6i citi(also AFX motor) with a 272cam, brospeed branch, 57mm zorst and uni-chip and I got 95hp at the last dyno day at KAR. No headwork at all
That sounds like fun, it will be able to rev...to infinity and beyond...sixteen10 wrote: would love to experiment by building an AFX sub assembly with a 16v head.

Re: Potent Citi 1.6i
seems the 1.6i's react very well to mods. my SO's friend has a citi 1.6i with branch and f/f and he left me standing in my stock 1.6i. was surprised by how much quicker it was.
would love to see what the 1600 motor can do with some headwork, cam, branch & f/f, nicely tuned software, pully and a can do attitude from the driver.
anyone know the best ever HP attained out of a 1600 naturally aspirated at KAR?
Regards

Re: Potent Citi 1.6i
These modded 1.6i motors are impressive for 1.6i's.There are major weaknesses with a heavily modified 1.6i though. There will be relatively little low down power and torque ( power band will be really high in the rev range). It will always be very short on maximum torque output too. A Honda motor springs to mind. It would be interesting to see "a 1.6i drop most 2l 8V's", maybe if the 2l 8v is running kiehin carb or is sick. To solve this you need more displacement or boost. Modding a 2l 8v on the other hand will obviously reap better rewards, better bang for buck. All the mods cost the same as the other 8v motors. 2l 8v motors aren't even expensive(R3000 - R4000) and changing engine numbers is easy.

Re: Potent Citi 1.6i
I wish somebody would actually do this. The theory behind it is great, and it should rev to 9000rpm no issue.sixteen10 wrote:would love to experiment by building an AFX sub assembly with a 16v head.
But somebody needs to actually do it. Will need to spend a fair amount of dosh though.

In essence all of the theory is pretty much covered , I really wanna build a stripped out zwartkops car like this. one day when i'm big and hopefully get onto this i'll pm you for some help

This will only really work if you can rev the nuts off it (like 9 or 10000 rpm), and to achieve that you will need to spend a bit of cash.

Re: Potent Citi 1.6i
its a real interesting idea.. when i was building my 1.9 i toyed with the idea of using the 1.6 block, 1.6 crank and going 83.5mm on the bore and a 16v head
It would have been something like a 1.7 16v.. wonder how that would have turned out...

Anything where the bore would be bigger than the stroke will make for a (potentially) high revving engine.Solo786 wrote:It would have been something like a 1.7 16v.. wonder how that would have turned out...

Re: Potent Citi 1.6i
Ive never seen the need for a small capacity, high reving motor. Apart from where you are restricted to a certain displacement. Theoreticaly it would rev up faster but i have never been in a worked 2.0 16v and came out saying i wish it reved up faster. A high reving 1.6 would be nice but a high reving 2.0 would definitly be better.
But back to the topic. Those 1.6 8v motors do go very well with a few mods. But the thing is the low end does suffer alot when you throw in a cam.

Re: Potent Citi 1.6i
Ok so we'd need to do the following :
1. port , polish and flow the head and more than likely need to run ITB's to supply enough air.
2. Replace cams with 300+ duration , dual valve springs and retainers , cam followers and change to solid lifter head ( dont know if 16v head is hydraulic or solid )
3. Balanced bottom end , possibly with forged internals ??
4. Vernier pulleys and adjustable cam pulleys
5. 63mm exhaust and 4-1 header
6. ARP bolts and rods
7. management and tuning?
Am i missing anything , quite a costly exercise for sure , but it will be an epic track car.
Another option would be 1.6 16v Turbo. I know a couple guys in the Opel club were running 1.6 bottom ends with 16v daewoo heads and around T3/T4 size turbos and making between 150-200wkw. could be a cracker?

40 or 42mm ITBs - Lengthened intake runners
16v head, flowed for race, bigger stainless steel inlet valves, Jenvey titanium valve springs and retainers + 0.5mm head skim
298 deg cam set with lightened vernier pulley
forged rods + forged hi-comp pistons 83.5mm
.05mm piston to bore clearance
balanced & knife edged 1.6i crank 77.4mm stroke
2l oil pump
300 cc injectors + 4 bar fpr + hi pres. fuel pump
40mm branch 4-1 + 57mm exhaust (one box)
IMHo this sort of motor will rev to 10 000 rpm ir close to it... perhaps a 20v head will help??
I'd love to build this

Wher is Zubair?
short stroke, small displacement high revving stuff.. hmm.. discussed this like couple years ago.
look at the berg cup cars in germany. 1600 16v golfs n/a revving close to 9k.
Btw, about 3 weeks ago, iv been in a locally built fully worked 1600 twincam toyota engine, itb's with toda racing stuff in..
revs to 11k!!!
made 186whp

Re: Potent Citi 1.6i
There is a stock car class here in sa, 1660 class.
You take a 1600 crank, 2e rods and 2.6 kombi pistons, flow the head and put in a big cam.
I ran one of these in my racing car last yr.
it made 100kw and 158nm ATW

100kw impressive.
is the 1600 u flow or x flow.
running itb's, sidies or std manifold. management? jus curious.
as a 2lt long block we built wif stock internals, no gasflowing or balancing.
other than lifters and cam (276) made little less kw, 97kw but 187nms atw. mp9.
btw revs to 7 k aswell.
again, impressive for a 1.6i 8v..

It was a U flow, running 40 Weber Sidies.
I only revved it to 8200RPM, but have seen stock car examples rev to 9000RPM

Available of the shelf...Honda B16A...actually it has a VW race engine to thank for it's capacity.sixteen10 wrote:would love to experiment by building an AFX sub assembly with a 16v head.
Original Vtec (Dubbed ZCG) was a 75mm bore 1590cc motor, then one of the Honda engineers found this VW engine, and the Honda B16A was fortunate enough to get the exact same bore and stroke...they just reduced conrod length to control pison speeds better.
