Modding my polo, advise needed!
Howsit guys, im new here and have also recently gotten hold of a (Mk3?) 1999 Polo Playa 1400i, stock.
This is what she looks like:
Im currently 18, so i dont exactly have a feasible income for modding the $#$% out of my car, but would like to do some small stuff to pimp my car out
Generally would like to have some exterior mods which are not to expensive and look good, not that kitsch stuff aka plastic spinners and what not lol xD
So far ive only installed a frontloader and a cone filter on my car..
Any advise on any nice mods i can do to my car which wont hurt my pocket to badly?

Re: Modding my polo, advise needed!
nice ride bro, at 18 your a lucky guy.
mods wise the cone filter wont help for performance. . .just makes more noise.
id say rims are a must, maybe 15's if the budget is tight. shop around and you'l get a good set that you could prob refurb & then get tyres. quick fix = black badge front and back, maybe tint if you like(would go nice with the colour of the car). also check for "spray tint", you could tint your front & side indicators and even tailights. its bout R40 a can. . .makes a huge diff.
just my advice

Re: Modding my polo, advise needed!
Thanks for the advice, ya im pretty stoked that I got the car at my age, then again was a dam good price! Ive never really liked that yellow/orange on the indicators etc, what colours can you get that spray tint available in? And how much of a difference does it actually make?jaredm wrote:nice ride bro, at 18 your a lucky guy.

With regards to the badge, what do you mean a black badge? Thought they only come in silver lol xD
Thanks!

Re: Modding my polo, advise needed!
I would definitely get rid of the cone filter!! It sounds great, but will eff up your MAF sensor... Rather just de-trumpet your standard airbox and use the standard filter... It'll give a nice growl when you give it some beans.
Next, get rid of the orange indicators and get you some clears. Now this is where you have to pay attention. There is a body parts shop in Maitland, but I can't remember the name. It's on the corner of Third Avenue and Voortrekker Road, just before the bridge on your left if you coming from Cape Town side, or just after the bridge on your right coming from Kensington side. They have the front corners for cheap, and that is where I bought mine for my deceased 99 Polo Classic. The sides you can maybe get from them too... Trust me, the clears make a BIG difference to the look of your car.
You can go to some other shop to get the clears, but chances are, those shops get there stock from that place I'm talking about.
Next up should be a drop for your suspension. Don't get Koenic. Seriously. Just. Don't.
Rather save up and get you an Eibach kit.
Then get you some wheels.
Personally, I like the chrome VW badges the way they are too... Never been a fan of blacked out badges... sorta like you ashamed of driving a VW...
Lot's of other stuff you can do afterwards, but I think that is the way to go at first.

Re: Modding my polo, advise needed!
Pity your in capetown, still have a set of brand new clear indicators from my polo front and sides.
As for the black badges, its been almost 2 years now since ive done mine and i still love em, its all personal preference as to if you want to do it.
Pics for kicks:

Re: Modding my polo, advise needed!
Actually it is not really a Polo at all but more a mix between a SEAT Ibiza and Volkswagen Polo But it would fit in as a MkIV Polo...ch4os wrote:Howsit guys, im new here and have also recently gotten hold of a (Mk3?) 1999 Polo Playa 1400i, stock.
Remove the conefilter if it is not properly insulated from teh heat of the engine...ch4os wrote:So far ive only installed a frontloader and a cone filter on my car..
I would start with a nice set of wheels and sort out the suspension to lower your ride height and improve your stance...ch4os wrote:Any advise on any nice mods i can do to my car which wont hurt my pocket to badly?

Re: Modding my polo, advise needed!
Wow, ok! Lots of replies lol thanks a lot guys!
Im gonna sound like a bit of a pain in the ass here, but how would you go about detrumpeting your airbox? Never heard of that before :S I always thought that my cone filter wasnt so lekka for my car, so im quite interested in a change in that department...
@ Shizzo: How much do those clears go for? They look awesome btw
General question once again: Will lowering the suspension decrease body roll?
So many dam questions i have haha, thanks a lot guys!

Eish guy, I bought those clears years ago... I think I paid R170 for both. Back then Suburban spares was selling them for R250 a pair, and Barons was selling them for R160 each!ch4os wrote:

Yes, the lowering springs will be firmer and will decrease body roll.

Re: Modding my polo, advise needed!
My first polo was the exact same one, just jazz blue (same as Shaun's)
Also had orange indicators and all, changed out all the orange and it made a world of difference! Also had a cone, was kind of lekker
Had 15's as well but the car looked a bit 4x4 with them so lowering is a must for you!
Xenon globes and a sub in the boot I had also
Maybe do a freeflow 50mm 2boxes later on, not that expensive

Re: Modding my polo, advise needed!
Revival from the dead!
Just want to say what i have done so far!
Detrumped that filter! (Decided to get rid of the cone... the detrumped noise just sounds so much better!)
Built my own backboard for my 6x9's (Must still take pic.. came out rather pro!)
And added 1x off center white GT stripe, vinyl ofcourse oh and no bubbles, score!
Next on the list..
Sub and Amp..(Coming soon!)
Clear indicators and taillights!
Riiiims!
