1800 jetta 2

Post by Rayzer69 »

Hi guys,

Got a 1989 jetta 2 clx carb 1800, used to be auto, have made it manual.
clutch is a bit stiff!
and I dont feel like I'm getting enough top speed!
Is that timing?
what mods can I do to get some some real power,
got 63 mil free flow.
branches
cone filter.

would like to go more valves.
would like to port and polish.
Would a different gearbox help?
What sort of cams can i get!

reliability is most important tho!

I guess it would depend on your budget, but start with a proper billit cam, say a 268 or 272 degree, freeflow system of 57mm, 4-2-1 branches, then you can look at going Fuel Injection, that will add a nice amount of power. 8)

How much will it cost to go fuel injected?
What does it involve?

63mm freeflow on a fairly stock 1800 carb is WAY too big. Run a straight 50mm, or, if you plan further mods, either a progressive 50:57mm or even a 57mm setup. The bigger you go the less bottom-end you will have.
Estas cams available from Nellis @ Sporcam: 021-9499914, don't go wilder than 276.
Stiff clutch action could be the cable or the pressure plate. Did you use new or 2nd hand items?

What kind of top speed are you getting, anyway?

We sourced out most of the parts from a clx 1800 manual.
clutch and pressure plate is new.
cable is new.
flywheel is new.
Getting about 170 top speed.
also CV joints seem to be getting loose all the time!

Depending on your budget, go for a 2liter (2e or ABF) with MP9 Fi, nice 276 cam, then you can use the 63mm FF zorst !
