1.4 mp9 running 276 cam

Post by Reedo »

Hi all

So I've installed a 276 cam in my golf mp9 1.4i

So already before installing the cam my golf started doing this where as if I approached a robot and press clutch sometimes my revs drop just below switching off then comes back up just under 1000 Rpm

Eventually started getting worse where as if I approached the robot insert clutch it dies immediately but started doing this once in a while.. While driving

Now got to a point where as if I drive even 5kms the car will atleast switch off 3 or 4 times every time I insert the clutch and let it go to idle..

I've been thinking it's my throttle body as I know they common to give issues with stabilizing the idling.

Had a dignostic done and no fault codes

Now back to the can issue

I stalled a 276 cam in.. It's a G cam

Since car is weak under 2500rpm

Over that it goes very nice

Sometimes idles but eventually dies

Tried timing siill no luck

Now yes I have read posts that says 276 is abit too much cam for 1.4

But few people told me they ran it for few months and only had fuel issues

No mine jerks under 2500rpm.. Weak as well

And can't get it to idle at all

Is this my main problem that's just showing worse now that I have a cam in??

Or is my throttle giving up and just worse with a cam.. Any info will be good thanks

276 and G cam are two completely different cams.
Get a 262 or 268 cam for that motor, the 276 (if it is in fact a genuine 276 degree cam and not some reground stock cam) is too much for the 1.4 motor.

+1, the car will never idle properly with a 276 on a stock mp9 system. Hope you didnt regrind a G cam otherwise you made a nice paperweight for yourself

Hi thanks alot for the replys

Not too sure hey bought the cam from a friend
On the rear end it's marked 276

Not too sure if it's been made up or not

So basically on a stock mp9 it won't work period.

What other markings do you see on the cam? Look between the lobes. The mp9 system cannot compensate that much. I think the most it can handle is maybe a 272. But yes, you will have issues with that cam with a standard mp9 system

You can allow more air through the throttle body during idle by drilling a small hole in the throttle body butterfly, which will help with the idle. From what I remember when I did it to my car, it is a 1.5mm to 2mm hole.

Start with a 1.5mm hole and if it still doesn't idle ok, make the hole 2mm.

Just keep in mind that if you then decide to go back to the stock cam, the engine will idle too high.

Patience is the ability to idle your motor when you feel like stripping your gears.

Thanks guys

I will remove my tappet cover tomorrow and see what I see on the cam and let you guys know

There after I will perhaps drill the hole as I might as well mess around with it since I'll eventually have to replace the throttle

Thanks alot will give feedback

Also on another topic what is the fuel pressure supposed to be on the fuel pump?

And for example i used a 4 bar fuel reg which suppose to be 3 would I encounter issues thanks again guys

Does anyone have a tuning chip or software for a 1.6 with a 286 camshaft in the MP9 control unit
