Oil Pressure Warning

Post by 175SBU »

Just when I thought all is well on my 1.4 boom Image oil pressure warning, I bought a replacement switch so am planning to work my way from switch and see if it disappears, I have a spare pump also if I need to replace it. Hopefully its not warn internals.

Hope it is just a failed sensor or are you planning to do an oil pressure test with a gauge too?

I replaced the switch:

The warning light comes on even when the car is not idling just as I switch on, it does that sometimes.

If it does not do that , i will start the car all fine but just as I reach 30/40 km/h it will buzz.

Not sure if I should replace the pump as well just to be safe or I have electrical wiring problems.

Where can i do the pressure test?

Get a mechanical pressure gauge and connect it to the one of the blanked oil ports on the oil filter housing (Should have an oil port there). Then check what oil pressure readings you are getting. I used a cheapish Equus gauge from Midas to confirm oil pressure and it did the job

Should be around 1 at idle and 2 bar at 2000 rpm on warm oil temp. Goes as high as 5 bar on cold oil. Few other forum members can also confirm oil pressure readings.

So the story continues, the car has been parked all along only managed to make some progress this week, I replaced the oil pump and it did not make any difference, I would start the car no clunky noises idles fine but as soon I rev to 2000 then beeeeep oil pressure warning Image️ so I decided to strip the head and this is what I discovered as per below pictures, the gasket is also paper thin gone to bare metal and oil was sipping through onto the valves and pistons. I bought the gasket already looking to install this weekend and see.

Hoping this is the root cause.

That was not what you would have expexted. Hoping it is the root cause of that beep.

Was the car smoking at all and using alot of oil or was it minimal oil loss and still undetected due to catching this in the early stages?

Is this a high mileage motor or was motor opened before at any stage of its life to may have caused the fasket to start failing?

I never seen it smoke to be honest, unless if it was very light smoke , I however recall at some stage that I refilled a lot of oil, that was a month or so before the beep, what I noticed after the beep when I was doing some troubleshooting I noticed that the oil viscosity had changed to almost water drip.

The car is not that very high mileage it is in its mid 360’s, I have never opened the head since I took ownership many many years so i’m not certain about the history but everything looked stock when i opened it, its been very reliable over the years.

So I took the head to engineering to get it checked and cleaned and put new valve seals, looks good, I would have done port and polish if i had some money 🥲which would have set me back R3000 only for that.

Managed to find some time to start putting it back together bit by bit after work, wanna put new timing belt and tensioner one time while i’m at it, hoping to fire it up on Friday if i get enough time after work during the week. Crossing fingers Imagehoping to get it to run sothat I can sell my Rox and use this as my daily once again.

Some useless update which might be useful

So i put the car back together and did the timing nice nice with vcds and timing light, there was no oil buzz during this phase because the car auto revs to 1.5rpm or so.

Then came the moment of truth, started the car and got it to nice temp then put foot on the paddle and boom 2000rpm oil buzz again

What’s strange here is that the buzz also comes on even when i turn the key on without starting so now i’m not sure whether i’m facing electrical issue here or what but I’m planning to get my hands on some gauge to check what the bar is going on with this buzz.

The other thing i forgot to mention is i took out the oil sensor and started the car it sprays all the way to the plugs not sure if this proves healthy pump or not.

Sounds more like a defective pressure sensor but for peace of mind get a mechanical oil pressure gauge and connect it at the position where the sensor fits.

Do this test when cold and hot to ensure no loss of pressure as soon as oil is on temperature.

Okie so I discovered something while I was snooping around, I took out a sensor from another car, flipped it cleaned looked Image and discovered that it is a 1.2 - 1.6 bar sensor, the one that i bought from GW is a 0.something to 0.something if I recall correctly Image so couldn’t use it the one that i took out from another car to test because I have already cut the wire and this one still has the original VW snap connector, I ordered something from Takealot it is a 1.4 bar and should be collecting later today, should have some news later in the day.

I agree with the question about the smoke.
If there is sufficient oil leakage into the combustion chambers to cause a drop in oil pressure, the engine should be smoking MASSIVELY.

Oil Pressure Warning

Post by 175SBU »

I bring with me some good news finally, after months of troubleshooting I can finally say we have no more Image oil buzzer beeep!

I got the 1.4bar sensor from Takealot put it in started the car and got it to some lekker temp before I could rev the …. out of it.

My goeie genade the smile Image on my face when i hit 3000rpm no red oil can light the excitement was priceless Image

Honestly I can’t say what the root cause was but I’m somewhat glad that I went through the exercise.
