Polo 9N3 Maintenance Thread

Post by Soprano »

Good Day folks'
I have been the proud owner of a 2006 Polo 9N3 for the last 8 years, and now I am hitting the 300 000Km on the odometer.
For the most part I have maintained her as recommended by the factory, however since the warranty expired I have attempted to do alot of the work myself. which brings me to my reason for this thread, I will be documenting my service tasks and tems for her and the associated costs. The requirements of keeping my beloved polo running for another 300K Km's and in the process hope to learn alot and hopefully contribute alot to other 9N3 owners.

Some History:
I bought her with approximately 70K on the clock and over the years she has had the following major items done:

- Cambelt
- New throttle body
- New clutch
- New rear shocks
- New radiator and fan

For her 300K anniversary I first done a conventional oil service. This includes the following items.
1. Spark plugs (NGK)
2. Oil change
3. Petrol filter
4. Air filter

I generally only do the cabin filter every 4th service as I don't smoke in the car.

There a numerous tutorials online detailing the above mentioned service, however the below is purely to detail the specific work carried out on my vehicle and the challenges encountered with my specific car. However please see the following link for details.

Next on the agenda was to locate and address every fault highlighted by diagnostic(details of the latest diag done below) and secondly what simply didnt feel right when driving her.

This morning I was confronted with a loud hissing like sound upon starting my car, In addition I noticed that my brake pedal had become incredibly hard and had very little braking power. I also noticed that my rev's at idle picked up from just under 1000rpm to a little over 1600rpm

The below video demonstrates the symptoms I experienced:

These symptoms immediately pointed to 1 of the following issues:
1. Vacuum leak
2. Faulty brake booster
3. faulty master cylinder

I inspected her guts, checked the brake fluid level which was fine, then I noticed a badly damaged vacuum hose which led from the brake booster and knew I had found the culprit. Specifically the pipe leading from the brake booster which is located behind the master cylinder(on drivers side of vehicle) and leads to the Throttle body.

This picture illustrates where the hose is located under the hood and if you look carefully on the connecting ends you can see that the pipe is clearly cracked.
Image

I simply pried the rubber end which leads into the brake booster with a flathead screw driver. Then I traced the pipe to the throttle body and gently tugged at it until it broke free from the TB. (couldn't get a good picture of this)

Image

The below image shows how damaged the hose was after removing it from the vehicle.

New hose:

This video demonstrates the results after the new hose was installed:

AThe new hose was obtained from GoldWagen Delarey (details below)
Removal and installation took approximately 10 minutes.

My brother (spdgti on here) has a 2008 Cross Polo (1.9TDi), went in for it's 270 000km service last week( FSH with VW). Oil changes are crucial. So far only normal wear and tear items (brakes, tyres, wipers) Also original windscreen was replaced last week as well due to stonechip spider crack, 8yrs and 270k km, not too bad. Everything else still original.
He does open road commute in the morning (no stop start) and managed to get 110k km and 120k km's on set of tyres (MY01's).....shows how much stop start affects cars components.

Which Shell Helix HX3,7 or 5?

I remember making a switch from magnatec 10W to HX5 on my MK2 and all I could hear was knock knock! knock! knock!

I drained it and never went back, am still scared to try it again.

I use the HX5 10W30.
Planning on doing a proper flush for her next oil change, cleaning the sump of any debris. Still reading up on different oils i can use, however for the time being I have no issues with thr hx5.

Common issues on them are the thermostat housing and the rear crack pipe that tend to fail.
Oh and radiator fans.

Seems these cars are reliable and ran properly when taken care of.
Thinking of getting the 1.4/1.6 one as prices are reasonable for daily duties.
Great thread with details information.

Thumbs up bro for starting this thread.

It was with a heavy heart that I announce that I simply cannot continue this thread as my car of many years has been stolen.
Needless to say I am broken.
I have however done some work on the petrol tank before the unfortunate event. I will upload full details with pics later.
I have 2 front brake discs and a clutch switch for the car to the member with the best offer on all items
