VW 2.3I 1996 Mikrobus running too hot
Good day guys, I hope you can help. I have a 1996 VW Mikrobus with 160 000km. The brass fan switch had to be replaced recently. Since then the bus has been running hot, more than usual. Mechanic says all is in order. What is the correct mark for the temperature gauge to sit when running at optimal temperature. I also found that if I drive faster than 110 to 120 bus seems to run warmer. Going on an uphill, it also heats up. Any advise? I'm from Bellville Cape Town, struggling to find a VW specialist for these vans that can sort this out. If someone can send picture of correct gauge position when at temp and also if so what I should be looking for. I know the aircon works with the fans, and found that when aircon is not working the switch is faulty. So had this replaced, but still.... Thank you

Re: VW 2.3I 1996 Mikrobus running too hot
We had some microbuses in the family, years ago and fr what I recall, the heat gauge would be above quarter and max out at halfway when at normal running conditions. The fan was a 2 speed fan and would switch on around halfway.
Best bet would be to check that the correct radiator fan switch was installed and that the radiator was bled properly after installation.
Beyond that, consider a flush of the cooling system, inspection of thermostat and water pump.

Re: VW 2.3I 1996 Mikrobus running too hot
n.gov3 Thank you for the reply. I also thought they might have installed the incorrect fan switch. As before they replaced it the gauge would be at quarter and then move to middle at times. I tested it yesterday, and van runs under normal conditions at half way, but when it works a bit hard like on an uphill the gauge could go to three quarters, but not over. Fan switches on, at half and almost at three quarters, which to me is a bit hot for my liking. Where would be a good place to find the correct fan switch, being a 2.3I with aircon. I think this switch has the three points they called it?

I suspect that you may have an issue with bleeding the radiator as there's probably an air pocket in there.
Try Goldwagen for those switches however also give vw a call. They may just have some old stock somewhere at a decent price
