Mark 1 Gearbox
Hi Fellas, I'm a newbie here with a question. I've a non-runner Golf Mark 1, Citi 1.3, been busy reviving it, how do I tell if the gearbox is a 4 or 5 speed? Engine code is AGY. Please help.

Engine code is AGY..
I'll go look for the g/box code. Hppe it's not too far to find.

Re: Mark 1 Gearbox
AGY is definitely a 1.3.....my old citi golf originally had that engine.
I do recall Panic mentioning that the 1.3 engines can be bored out and with a crank swop, capacity can be increased. The thread will be on the forum somewhere

Re: Mark 1 Gearbox
Easy way to know is the following.
The gearbox mounting under the battery tray, if it has 4 bolts from the top of the mounting to gearbox and has a flat 5 bolt blanking plate on the rear closest to your left wheel, it is a 4 speed. If it has a gearbox mounting with 2 bolts horizontally and a round plate disk on the rear (usually green color), you have a 5 speed gearbox installed.
Look underneath the car on the rounded bellhousing part where it bolts to the motor and the steel plate that is between motor and gearbox, you will find a flat square where the gearbox code isstamped in.
