Not VW (but hopefully someone can offer some advice)
Hi guys,
Trust all is well.
I know this is not VW related but I’m hoping someone that knows diesels and/or turbos can offer some advice.
I have a 2007 Santa Fe 2.2CRDi and I recently had to rebuild the complete motor due to an overheating incident.
As part of the rebuild I recon’d the complete turbo (all internals) and flushed the intercooler.
While running-in the motor for the first 1000kms, I started noticing a whining sound. The whine only started around the 800km mark.
On startup it sounds like a supercharger running and the whine gets louder with accelerating. There does not seem to be a loss of power but I am also still taking it easy as I just did the oil change and only covered around 1200kms since the rebuild.
I have attached a video below that highlights the whine.
The car has been de-catted so is a little louder than it should be.
Considering that the turbo has just been completely recon’d I’m hoping it’s not ”turbo death” or “turbo failure” but Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Not VW (but hopefully someone can offer some advice)
Usually the whine is indicative that the turbo is on its way out, or the recon was not done properly. Have it checked out because if the turbo is indeed faulty or bearings were not put right / turbo not balanced, it might explode and cost you big money. Seems like whoever reconned the turbo didn't do a good job.
Might be a boost leak too.
Could also be a bearing on the tensioner or something like your alternator bearing or waterpump as well.

Re: Not VW (but hopefully someone can offer some advice)
Thanks Callum....
The noise is there as soon as I touch the accelerator.
It’s not there when the car is coasting downhill though.
It’s there at like 30km/h also. Long before the car would usually come into boost.
Would that still be indicative of a turbo issue?

Re: Not VW (but hopefully someone can offer some advice)
I would suggest to first drive with the auxillary belt off and check if the whine is still there. Don't drive very far as the car will only be running on battery power and the alternator is off.
If the sound is still there, then the belt and ancillaries are not at fault.
Not sure how your car is, but if you can remove the boost pipe going from the intercooler to the turbo(just unplug the intercooler side) and check if the turbo still whines, if it's whining much louder, it's most likely the turbo. Just make sure that nothing can be sucked in the turbo.
The whining would stop when it's out of boost though as that was what mines did. Only from 2000rpm up under load it started to whine. When I pulled the turbo off, the turbo had some strong resistance on the turbines, the shaft bearing had failed. This was after 270 000 kms though so it was wear and tear. Leaving it like that is just a matter of time before it blows into pieces, but then too, some people have the same car as mines and theirs whines and it's fine like that as that is how it came from the factory.
It's just that you might be taking a chance that the turbo is fine though and the last thing you want is to suck metal into your newly rebuilt engine.

Re: Not VW (but hopefully someone can offer some advice)
So I removed the pipe between turbo and intercooler and the noise did not get louder. Obviously just more of a blowing sound.
I haven’t had a chance to check the belt yet. Hopefully this weekend.
The noise is there as soon as I touch the accelerator not only in boost.
I hope I can get to bottom of it by the weekend and I hope it’s not serious.

Re: Not VW (but hopefully someone can offer some advice)
Sounds like you cleared on the turbo. When the pipe is off, the sound gets much louder.
Is the sound also happening when car is stationary and you rev it?

Yes it’s not very evident on idle.Callum229 wrote:Sounds like you cleared on the turbo. When the pipe is off, the sound gets much louder.

But if I rev in neutral it’s there. Not only when moving.

Great so that rules out anything with suspension, wheel bearings or gearbox(could be clutch or flywheel though).

It’s a 5 speed auto. Would the transfer box or transmission make noises while in neutral?

Re: Not VW (but hopefully someone can offer some advice)
Trans and transfer box shouldn't make any noises, however input shaft can make noise as well as flywheel.

Thanks again for the advice.
I need to check the belts this weekend and then boost/vacuum pipes for any leaks.
Could a blown exhaust gasket be the culprit???
