VW POLO 9N3 1.6 BAH not starting in first try.
Hi guys
Have noticed over the past few days that my car isn't starting on the first try. When I turn the key I can hear the pump prime as soon as it's done I turn to start but nothing engine turns no catch.
Turn the key off and on and turn to start and starts no problem every time on the second try. Happens in the mornings and when I'm done with work.
Battery, plugs and all the rest was check and all good. Changed the coolant sensor still the same. Any ideas maybe? Always use to start on the first turn. Bothers me that's now the second turn that it starts. I should mention once the car starts no problem after that. Only if it's left for a while over night etc. Have read that could be loosing pressure while standing. Any guidance in what I can check. Oh also have scanned the car. Clean of errors.

My brother had hard start issue on his XPolo 1.9TDi, turned out to be the starter on the way out. Very similar (exactly) symptoms to what you state. Mileage on car?

Well in that case pump, pump, relay, so pit a fuel, pressure gauge on and see if thmpressure come up. Next check for spark.

Seems like a fuel pressure issue

Going to change the fuel filter later as it has the fuel regulator built into it. Might do the trick.Ashveer03 wrote:Seems like a fuel pressure issue

Yup randomly change some stuff. It is always better than proper diagnosis

Re: VW POLO 9N3 1.6 BAH not starting in first try.
If it's a fuel pressure issue, and the pump primes normally upon switching the ignition on, then I would try to cycle the ignition a few times, i.e. prime the pump a few times. This should build up sufficient pressure for a successful first-time start. If repeated ignition cycling helps, then you know that the fuel pressure is lost while the car stands. If repeated cycling does not help, then it's probably not a fuel pressure issue.
That being said, I agree with Stephan. Before you change anything, do a proper diagnosis.

Re: VW POLO 9N3 1.6 BAH not starting in first try.
Thanks guys. Ok did as suggested. primed the pumped about 6 times this morning. Still no start on first crank. Second time as always.I dont get it. the car drives perfect. No stalling,no jerking,no loss of power, not using extra fuel no error codes.Car starts every time no problem after my first start in the morning.Same issue happens when i leave for work, thats only if i dont leave office during the day.Car stands from about 6:30 to 17:00 if im at office all day.Any suggestions?VAG Fan wrote:If it's a fuel pressure issue, and the pump primes normally upon switching the ignition on, then I would try to cycle the ignition a few times, i.e. prime the pump a few times. Re: VW POLO 9N3 1.6 BAH not starting in first try.
Yes i already gave you suggestions. What you are actually asking is a solution where you don't have to do anything.
You have to do some fault finding. Ie check for pressure and check for spark.

Will have go buy a pressure gauge quick this morning. In regards to spark. Is it possible that the coil pack can give no spark on the first crank but spark on the second crank?panic-mechanic wrote:Yes i already gave you suggestions. Re: VW POLO 9N3 1.6 BAH not starting in first try.
Yes and no. But if you have no spark it can lead you to something else. Like the immobiliser. But if you don't know you can't even elliminate one of the possibilities. Fault finding is as much about finding out what it is not as that can lead to what it is....

I have exactly the same problem . 1.4 Petrol 9N Polo . Mine is so bad you have to crank it for 2 mins , before it would start . Thereafter it's fine for the whole day . Next morning , same trouble

Re: VW POLO 9N3 1.6 BAH not starting in first try.
If you haven't done so already, I would start by replacing the engine coolant temperature sensor. If the engine doesn't get a cold-start enrichment in the morning, it would do exactly what you've described. For the rest of the day, there is enough warmth to start the engine without enrichment.
