MIB II Advice

Post by TonyMoneo »

Good evening VAG people

We are in the process of buying a 2017 Tiguan 2.0 TDI Comfortline and I need some advice on the infotainment.

The car is listed with the 6.5" Composite media package, although after viewing the car I've noticed that it has an 8" display (without navigation).

The screen has a nasty mark on it with a couple of dead pixels and roughly a 2cm scratch. Not end of the world but I would like to know what my options are to replace it.

Here is the current setup:

I can get a refurbished 8" unit from Vagtec, but it has buttons for navigation (which this car definitely does not have). Do I simply need to connect a GPS antenna or is there more to it to convert to the "Discovery package"?

Here is a photo of the unit:

Alternative number 2 is to get the "facelift" of the MIB II infotainment. I can get a new OEM unit, but I am not sure if it is plug and play (apart from changing the trim plate to accommodate the new positions of the two knobs). Will it require a software update to be compatible or is the software loaded in the unit itself?

Here is a photo of the new version:

I would appreciate any advice.

Rather get the face-lift MIB, as far as I know it's just PnP. I did replace my unit with the face-lift and it works fine

Did you have to replace the trim/cover around the radio?

as far as I know, in the newer units, the front is just a screen, you need the "brain", which is usually the part in the glove box that takes the CD and CD cards etc. If the processor part has satnav, then just adding the gps antennae should get it working
I'm not sure you can interchange the screen part and "brain" parts.
There is also the issue of getting the component protection sorted out.
At any rate, if Vagtec is providing it, there will know how to get it all working.

Yes I had to replace the facia trim.

Other than that nothing was replaced. Left the car at Vagtec in the morning and collected around 10

If they are any components restrictions, they experience enough to work around that
