Polo Tandem pump

Post by VGTI »

So on Saturday I changed the oil and filters and while I was busy decided to change the coolant temp sensor. After 20 minutes and finally getting the plug off (still no feeling in my right index finger). Mistake 1 never check new CTS with plug... took the sensor out but cannot get the o-ring out. Eventually after about 2,5l of coolant it stops flowing.

Anyway put the new one in and what do you know... wrong one. They gave me the 4 pin green one instead of the two pin grey one.

So while in there with the air box out I see the sorry state of the oil leak around the Tandem Pump area.

Now the question... how do I know if it is the pump itself or the gasket between head and pump that is leaking? Even somewhere else...

The price of a new pump is quite steep and I have the gasket set and bolts already... just too scared to take the thing off

Depends how long it has been leaking for, that whole area is normally in a complete mess.
Only way to be certain is to wash the area clean and monitor it over a day or 2 while the area is still clean.

Most likely always the gasket inbetween the head and pump, some okes also think over tightening the pump bolts will stop the leak, but it busts the threads out instead, especially on the 6mm bolts - so check for damaged bolt threads aswell

Yes I know the torque setting are low, even bought a small torque wrench just for that...

There was a recall on the thing for the outside bolts (on that black cover) so I don't think the unit itself was ever taken off. Hope not! If they messed up the threads I'd be pissed!

It's been leaking for some time. :(

Does it leak at the back? It's a kak place to get in and see...

Will clean it Saturday when I attempt the Coolant temp sensor again.

They leak on 2 sides, either at the oil port on the back side of the head on the exhaust side also at the fuel port on the bottom of the pump where the fuel return line is.

U can get a good look at the back if the airbox and plastic intake pipe is removed, the bottom area is better checked when the battery is removed (doesn't really have to be removed unless u want all the extra working space)

So I replaced the temperature sensor and sommer did a complete coolant flush with some fresh G12... now the check engine light stays on on the dash. Do I have to reset it with vagcom? Or will it go away?

If thenfault is gome it will self reset after a number of starts. Like 5 to 7 depending on the management. But always better to clear the code.

There is a definitive difference in temperature gauge behaviour

Before it would go to 90 a lot quicker than now, even on cold mornings, sometimes it woul dip back to 0 and back to 90. Obviously it was stuffed!

This morning it took 18 kms for the gauge to go upto 90.

There also seems to be a marked difference in consumption, is this plausible or placebo?

Very plausible. Fuelling is determined by the temperature reading the ecu is geting.
