Performance Road Tyres vs. Semi-Slicks

Post by Riyaadhsaley »

Hey guys. I'm currently running TWT performance tyres on my STG2 Golf 5 GTI. They're budget tyres and came with the car. It's time to change tyres and I no longer want to get left off the line every time I race due to wheelspin. It's DSG, so it's not my launching thats a problem. It spins from 1st into 2nd. The car is my daily and I've been getting mixed feedback on using semi-slicks every day. What are you guys running on your FWD turbo cars and why?

Semi's are definitely not going to be much better especially now with hp street tyres at the level that they are.

I'd go with a set of PS4 S .

The PS4S is not a semi slick. It's a road tyre. The Cup is the semi slick. Problem is though that the PS4S only comes in 19".

@Op, semi's are great, but they are not made for mileage or wet weather. So you are going to cough up regularly for tyres.

You can also look at these, not semis, but close and you can drive in the wet with them.

Personally a Performance Road Tyre me for a all-rounder , Unless this is a race car and you chasing times then Semi's or even full slick

Why?
As said semi's not good for mileage or wet weather so not good idea for a daily.
Some wheel spin puts less strain on Drive-train parts

Alot of power in a FWD turbo car ,especially with small frame turbo's(max torque early) , makes 1st gear useless. I have the same problem, only start moving when in second.

I reckon coming from your TWT special to any of the above tires , Will be a step in the right direction , they come with a premium though with Michelin's being the most expensive but the best of the lot in my opinion , unfortunately they not good for mileage but it's the compromise for having grip.

As the guys have already mentioned, semi's should only be used when you know you're going to put the car through its paces. They are extremely skittish in wet weather, and it isn't a great feeling. I got caught in a storm coming up from Durban and it was a nightmare. Performance tyres will depend on budget.

Michelin's are the go-to, but pricey. Personal preference are Goodyear's F1 Asymmetrics. The overall feel, wear and grip is brilliant - and they are affordable. Thereafter you can look at Achilles and Conti - hate Dunlops due to their road noise.

I had them on my previous bmw , my Megane is currently on a full set of AD08s . My previous tyres (conti 5p and even GY Asm 3) were so good that i honestly feel they are a better than running semi's. More so if you looking for TLGP benefits.

On the street it's so hard to get temperature into the semi's , id stick to good streets and put the semi's on for track stuff .

Yea agree . Initial turn in was terrible! Wet grip was really great. Best bang for buck tyre in my opinion.

I would always say get Michelin Pilot 4S or Conti Sport 6's... if you have a budget the best bang for buck is a Toyo Proxes Sport... they do a lovely job on my Clubsport.

Do you know who stocks Toyo Proxes Sport in 225/40 r18? I've been looking around for a while but to no avail.
