If it says VW 502 approved it should be fine.

Re: Mk5 gti oil
HX7 will not be a problem. Your car is not a Diesel with Pumpe Duze injectors. You are reading the wrong thread.

Re: Mk5 gti oil
Hx7 and ultra are fine. But they have a high evaporation loss so the boost pipes and intake end up with alot of oil in it. Rather look at a 504 oil or something with lower NOACK value. Should help with carbon buildup on valves.

Re: Mk5 gti oil
Yes HX7 meets your GTI spec.
To clear up any confusion:
HX7 for both petrol & diesel engines(VW502.00 & 505.00):

AND
HX7 Pro AV ,specifically for Diesel engines (VW 502.00/505.01)

Re: Mk5 gti oil
10w40 is fine, wont do any harm.
1.The spec i.e 502.00/505.00 means that the oil/product provides adequate lubrication/protection required by the VW engine.
2.Mineral & Synthetic Oil (Full Synthetic actually doesn't exist) - difference is the refinement process & additives to the oil and it's benefits thereof.
3.Viscosity (measure of resistance of a fluid to a change in shape, movement) i.e 10W = measurement when cold , 40 = measurement at operating temperature.
Factory viscosity for your GTI (AFAIK) is 5w30 , but because you have a old car (more tolerances) , using 10w40 gives you the adequate protection but means the engine will have to work harder because oil is thicker = more heat , less performance, less fuel economy etc.....

Re: Mk5 gti oil
The 40 is Ok for older engines and specially where they are known to have pressure issues which the BWA is. So no harm will come to your motor from that oil.

While it is hard to find a truely full synthetic oil they do exist. Some of Motul 8100 range and some of the castrol oils come to mind. These have a proper Group 4 base oil.
Alot of the other oils like the Shell helix and Liquimoly oils use a treated mineral oil(group 3) as the base oil and add some synthetic on top of that. But having said that, its not terrible to have a treated group3 base oil.
Viscosity is a bit more tricky. VW502/504 etc have requirements for viscosity and because of the range given you can either endup with a thick 30 weight oil or a thin 40 weight oil. The Helix range is actually pretty thin as a 40 at 13.1CST at 100C so not a lot thicker than most of the 30 weight oils. You won't have any issues there.
The viscosity that also matters is the HTHS which is >3.5 on VW approved oils.
