Golf 4 1.8T

Post by Ettos »

Hi guys,
I removed my oil pan and found 2 thrust washers/bearing inside. The car did rattle a lot while driving,is it only the 2 that goes on the side of no 3,or should it be 4 meaning 1 at the top and 1 on the bottom on each side or 1 at the top on side and other 1 at the bottom on other side?

Guy you have big issues.

Not for one second should you even consider putting the thrust washers back.

Pull the motor, strip it down to block, crank and pistons, then take the head and the bottom end to the engineers.

Sit down when they call you.

The crank is worn on the thrust surfaces, possibly also on the rest of the bearing surfaces. There is no way a normally working engine can lose those washers, not unless the engine was very close to total failure.

On second thoughts, go shop for a used motor. It'd probably be cheaper all said and done. Make sure to install a new cam belt and water pump before dropping it in. Big headache if it breaks soon after the swap.

Thanks for the reply, what I failed to mention is as soon as the car hits temperature it says oil pressure not right while it's filled to mark and when that happens it always dies when I go over a sppedbump or gets to stop sign

Yup. Start shopping for a replacement motor. The crank and block will be scrap already at this stage.

This can happen in any engine. Caused by spending too much time with your foot on the clutch. It does not mean or indicate a bad engine design.
That basic block and crank has been around forever and is very good. So you can happily buy two...
Just make it a habit to slip it into neutral and take your foot off the clutch at robots..

I saw a post back from 2009 that you said Panic that 1 must get the apu engine for conversion, the golf has the agu motor in. What else would I need apart from 280mm brake upgrade, can I use a normal clutch with conversion or must it be hydro? I'm somme asking here so that I don't need to create another thread

Can use normal clutch. 210 mm setup with the 1.8 16v pressure plate will hold 200 odd hp without issue.

Replacement motor from mym autoworld and service items like cambelt, waterpump and oil service might work out cheaper than engineering work and possible junk block and crank due to wear. Thrust washers out and no sealing for oil pressure = 99% of total wrecked motor.

Ok, guys motor is out, there's absolutely no marks on crank, there is however wear on the cup where the thrust washer suppose to sit, the ones we've replaced the last time actually sits in their positions.. Mech advise that oil pump could be shot or that pick up could be blocked. Can one clean the pickup or just buy a new pump for R1k?

You're better off just replacing the pump while it is apart if the state of it is questionable instead of cleaning a pickup and hoping the pump is good.

I suggest you very carefully measure the gap in the crank on that journal. Oil pump failed would do way more damage to big ends and mains than to a thrust bearing so i suggest that is not the reason. Usually thrust fails for mainly two reasons.
Constantly sitting with foot on the clutch.
harder than normal pressure plate.

The oilmpressure light would have come on becuase the thrust washers buggered off. But those pumps are cheap, just put a new one in anyway.

Ettos take all the advice that Panic is throwing at you and put it to good use bud, or else you will end up paying dearly on school fees.

These 1.8t motor's are bulletproof long as they are maintained well. My audi A3 1.8t had 300k on the clock and never gave a day of ****. sold the car few years and from what i heard not long ago it's now doing close to 370k still ticking along.

good luck with the motor.
