2e steel gasket
Hi can anyone tell me the compressed thickness of the victor reinz steel head gasket and also the elring steel head gasket. Im looking for a gasket with a compressed thickness of 1.8mm. thanks

Re: 2e steel gasket
I have seen the above topic however they speak of the 2l 16v head gaske. So is the 8v gasket the same compressed thickness?

Re: 2e steel gasket
So just to make sure i can work on a compressed thickness of 1.6mm for a steel victor reinz or elring head gasket?

Thanks panic, between the victor reinz and elring which one would be close to 1.8mm?

Re: 2e steel gasket
Reason I ask is i am doing a 1900 8 v conversion on my 1.8 golf with 2.3 pistons decked flush to the block. I did cc the head and came up with the ffg:
Bore: 83.5
Stroke: 86.4
Head volume: 29cc
Dish cc: 12cc (Not sure as pistons have not been decked)
Deck clearance: 0
Compressed gasket thickness: 1.6mm victor reinz
Compression works out to 10.6:1
I am not sure if this compression will be fine on pump fuel at the coast or if i need to look for a thicker head gasket or another way to get the compression lower.

Thanks panic, which gasket is closer to 1.8mm as you mentioned the elring metal gasket or the victor reinz?

Re: 2e steel gasket
Ok I bought the victor reinz 2e steel gasket today as well as the 2.3 caravelle (40 thou) pistons with hastings rings and ks bearings. Looking at the pistons they seem to have a very small dish. Can anyone tell me the dish volume of the 2.3 pistons standard and after its decked flush to the 1800 (hv) block. I know I will have to measure it but it still has the squish pad so I have no idea how to measure it. I just want to know if im close in my estimation of 12 cc after decking flush to the block. Any help will be appreciated.

Re: 2e steel gasket
The VR and elring gaskets are identical.
You have to measure volumes. No guessing. I cannot tell you what the dish volume is. We never measure that on it's own. You drop the piston 5 mm into the block and meaure that volume and then calculate it out as that allows you to include the squish pad.

Re: 2e steel gasket
Ok I did cc the piston now,I just cc'd the dish portion as the squish pad will be machined out when i deck the pistons flush to the block. Calculating compression ratio again now I get the following:
Bore: 83.5mm
Stroke: 86.4mm
Cylinder head volume: 29cc
Piston dish volume: 8cc
Piston to deck clearance: 0
Compressed gasket thickness:1.8mm
Compression ratio then works out to: 11.03 :1
Is this too much compression to run at the coast(kzn) as the car is carburetor and has no knock control and if so how do you suggest I drop the compression ratio. I was thinking of decking the pistons below deck by 0.2 mm which gives a compression ratio of 10.74:1.

Re: 2e steel gasket
@panic is it ok to deck the pistons below deck or will the above compression ratio be fine at the coast on 95?

Re: 2e steel gasket
you'll have to run fairly reduced timing at 11.03. You can deck them below the block but of course tha makes them prone to detonation even more due to the lack of squish pad.

Re: 2e steel gasket
Ok thanks Panic that is what I was thinking as well, do you have any suggestions on how to reduce the compression enough to run on pump fuel at the coast? Does the 2.5 Caravelle piston have a dish with a bigger volume and if so would it work out if I use the 2.5 pistons and deck the block?

Re: 2e steel gasket
Also if I do use the 2.5 pistons and deck the block(approx 2.5mm) would the standard cambelt and a vernier pulley be able to get the timing on the mark again.

Re: 2e steel gasket
Generally that. what we do. 2.5 pistons - deck the block right. vernier to fix.

Re: 2e steel gasket
So with my above measurements, would it be better to use the 2.3 and if so how can I lower the compression enough for pump fuel for everyday use or do I use the 2.5 pistons and deck the block. Also what is the highest compression ratio I can run in durban on an 8v ?

Re: 2e steel gasket
Play with the sizes and see what suits you the best. That is what school fees are about. I don't live in durban so really almost never tune cars for the coast. Speak to the guys down there. They will be able to tell you what works and what doesn't.

Re: 2e steel gasket
Well actually wanted something with a close to standard compression ratio of 10:1 -10.5:1.....im not looking for the most power as it will have to drive everyday...but my bore is 40 thou over and has a ridge. So just a safe formula for the specs I gave would help.

hard to say as I don't even know exactly what engine you are rebuilding. You have not given ANY of that. Basically just stared asking what gasket thickness.

Re: 2e steel gasket
Oh ya thats true.
Its a 1.8 8v carb motor. 40 thou over bore with a ridge. Plan to use it daily and would like some power as well. Im going to run it on a carb and not change to injection. So needs to run on 95 and will not have knock control. Anything else you want to know.

So you are then building a 1900. there are a million and three threads on exactly how to do that, Do a search. Yes around 10,5:1 should be your aim.
