2l 8v engine problem

Post by speedfreex »

Hi guys

Have a 2l 8v mp9 system on my golf 1 2000model...car use to run perfectly after being parked off for a while now but started now and again just to keep it running and turning the motor over.
last start was 5 weeks ago before planning to rebuild car in terms of body work n cosmetics...car started perfectly n I filed for 10mins no problems

Plan was to rebuild car and run daily...car is completely built up again but now have a problem with engine.

The car starts on the turn every time but only revs or idles for 10seconds every single time then switches off

I have installed a new fuel pump new coilpack new leads plus service done but still it starts the same only idles for 10 seconds then switches off

How would I go about finding out what's the problem.

Thank you for the replies in advance🙋

I suspect it to be an electrical fault

Did you check out your dizzy? it could possibly be a faulty hall sender

Sounds like a fuel pressure problem.

Ok but I fitted a new fuel pump same as to the old one when the car use to run.

How would I go about checking the fuel pressure?

Not really once I had spark and car turns over I ruled out the distributor

A friend suggested I connect a test light to the 3 wires lead in to distributor to see if continuous power was supplied...light came on turn of ignition and stayed on while running and after car switched off the light still remained on.

That's why I ruled out the distributor

Maybe try another distributor. We had the issue very similar issue you are having on my brother's 2lt 8v. Changed leads, plugs, coil same problem when we put the new distributor the car ran 100% and still is.

Ok I fitted the the distributor from the jetta
At first I was not getting any spark
Then I think the starter gave up cos its just making a clicking noise and is barely turning the motor. Its like the teeth on the starter are worn out and cannot turn the flywheel

Have a starter from the jetta will it fit n work?

Brushes on starter most likely gone, you can get it repaired... If it's clicking then bendix not engaging to turn the flywheel.

To answer you question a "jetta" starter will work if from a mk2/3
