1991 Golf 1.3 Carb Starting Issue Please Assist

Post by MahomedOz »

Good day guys thanks for checking this out

I have an issue where my car starts fine but after driving about and switching off it won't won't start again.

This happened yesterday and somehow it refused to kick start as well. However after a whole it started fine like normal. Few kms down the road I switched it off, it refused to start again but If I give the dash board a slight bang or push near the choke area she starts on the turn.

What could be going wrong I have no clue , I haven't done any trouble shooting yet because i don't know where to start.

Please assist me

Okay so just the fact that you have to wack the dash says it is a loose wire. Check under the dash in that area and work outward.

Is there some form of immobiliser fitted?

I had a similar problem on my 1990 Fox. The control box of the immobiliser (the type with a 3-pin mini fob) had a cold solder joint. After localising the box in the dash and resoldering, all was good.

[Edit: when your car won't start, does the starter motor actually turn? If so, you could check whether there's a spark.]

Yes I Fitted My Alarm And Immobilzer At creative audio in Durban, it apparently activated with the remote o. The alarm but I actually don't use the alarm, so I'm not sure there, but it swings like it wants to take recently but doesn't, after couple minutes or a swings it struggles to take then it takes and starts, if I drive, and switch of it will struggle but start, more then 5 minutes again it happens

Sounds like a sketchy wire somewhere. And check the coil and carb.

as usual you have to do some testing. Does it have spark , does it have fuel at that stage?.

What Panic said.

Next time it switches off, check if there is spark from the coil, and then from the plug leads.

If you have spark, then check if there is petrol in the fuel filter, and if there is actually fuel in the carb at the point that it switches off.

Let us know from there.
