Engine turns but no start

Post by caddy club » Wed Jul 11, 2018 6:43 am

Hi guys

Just a general question, when they are saying you droppend valve what exactly does it mean, does it mean you over revv and the valve drops from the head to the piston and comes completly out of the head

If a valve drop or a valve gets bend by cambelt broke, will the motor not turn over

Is the HM 1.6 caddy carb engine a non interverence motor

Thanks

Dropping a valve doesnt necessarily means over revving , it's one of the reasons but yes , the valve drops from the head onto the piston/into the bore. - This is disastrous whether the motor is a non interference design or not.

however on a non inference motor , valves are safe if the cambelt breaks - even if there's a valve stuck open - as long as it doesn't drop.
(the piston and valve will never meet each other even if the valve is open aka non inference motor)

Motor will not turn over if there is anything in the path of the pistons - Like the saying that goes " the motor skoped vas"

Its probably your starter or battery then. If you dropped a valve it wouldnt turn by hand.

spark & fuel?

Turning by hand is somewhat good news ,You should do a Compression test , It that checks out , drain oil , remove sump and have a look

No i’ve been driving this caddy for long now,,so if turns by hand it means no conrod or valve damange hence its turning,,,compression test not done yet but what bothers my how did the oil filter came loose and all oil coming out there,,,when i looked at the oil filter it was loose with the oil filter seal sticking out on the one side

Once again thanks for the help,,, just hope its not major

Often happens when you fit a double seal at a service. So pull the filter off and look at it carefully.

BUT BUT BUT
ALSO here is the fun kicker. If your oil pump pressure release valve has failed this happens. It makes so much pressure that it forces oil past the seal - this also pumps up the lifters so much that the valves are left standing open so won't run. I have had that twice in my life before - Change the oil pump in that case.
It will crank like it has no compression - soo just huhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh from the starter motor - not chi chi chi chi .

How much oil is left in the sump? You musnt over tighten oil filters or they bulge the seal and that will loosen off the filter.

Ive also seen this with someone that tried to use oil thickner to reduce a bearing noise and blew the oil out the top of the filter. Wasnt very pretty

Oil related issues normally result in engine rebuild, not nice. Good luck with the motor rebuild.

Some are lucky to catch oil issues before further damages, others not. All the best with the rebuild

Not advisable , if you insist , if it's already loud then you don't have much time , If it's soft, you can drive it till it's louder.

Worst case , the rod will let go and destroy block.

As it stand now , Hopefully all you need is a new set of bearing's , If you keep driving it , you'll damaged the entire bottom.

I wouldn’t drive it with a knock even a soft knock. This will cause damage to the crank and then you have to strip the whole bottom end and rebuild.

You might be lucky that you only need new bearings now with the soft knocking. When you replace bearings, measure for oval journals and check for grooves or scoring marks on journals. Any of above and rather do a full bottom end rebuild now to save you having more or bigger issues later on.
