Radiator for Crossflow Throttles
Hi Guys,
My first post and advice seeking mission.
Firstly I drive a Citi Rox, 2l 8v shortblock, stage 3 build by Sarel with single throttle.
Planning on going crossflow Throttles but I’m just having some issues around the radiator. I know cheaper ain’t always better but I just want to find out if any one here has dropped their standard radiator down to allow the trumpets to to get access to fresh air.
I have searched the forum, this topic has been discussed with regards to other radiator options, but I’m just checking if dropping the radiator is a good option. I trust Sarel but personally not sure if I want to cut the car yet.
Much appreciated guy.

Re: Radiator for Crossflow Throttles
i would like to know the answer too. Heard about this cut and drop too, but also very worried that it will weaken the front valance. It will definitely be weaker with the cut out unless the cut out gets boxed and welded up.Rox_Star wrote: ↑Sun Mar 04, 2018 9:32 pm Hi Guys,

Re: Radiator for Crossflow Throttles
We cut a BMW 540 rad in half and mounted the halves behind each other with custom end tanks. Worked a charm.

Re: Radiator for Crossflow Throttles
Oh gee no that was around 12 years ago - pics long gone. tanks were built by Aero tig in spartan but I believed he has also passed away since.
Was the first series 540 that came out. so would have been E39 I think?.
I was just the right length to fit snugly in the mk1's nose.
We ran small aftermarket fans and never had heat issues

Re: Radiator for Crossflow Throttles
Ok thanks. Google says the E39 tank dimensions are 650mm x 440mm (L x H). This is the correct one right? So we cut it horizontally and get tanks make up for them after they stacked?panic-mechanic wrote: ↑Thu May 10, 2018 12:48 pm Oh gee no that was around 12 years ago - pics long gone. tanks were built by Aero tig in spartan but I believed he has also passed away since.

Re: Radiator for Crossflow Throttles
I have searched online and also came to the E39 model and dimensions you got. Looking at radiator flow characteristics then, I think this was made with an entry on the one tank, passing over on the tank on the other end tank to the other core and exiting on the other end tank in front of the tank where it entered. Motor side entered on the core closest to motor and return to head from the front core to prevent the hotter motor water coming out of motor to heat up the second core if second core was sitting at the motor side returning to head. Thermo switch then on bottom corner of end tank passing from one core to the other core.Rox_Star wrote: ↑Thu May 10, 2018 12:52 pmOk thanks. Rox_Star had nmeasurements higher up in his post 650mm L x 440mm H. Cut in half then relate to 220mm H. Giving plenty free air space as the distance from bottom to top available is 330mm H (110mm open space).
