Re: Ffz gearbox
AEN has MUCH MUCH longer gear ratios. So it will feel a lot slower and will be much slower accelerating. it might be lighter on fuel but it will feel very different to drive.

Re: Ffz gearbox
So it will be better to put my internals in that casing, ive read else where that the 3rd and 4th gear on the AEN box is stronger than FFzpanic-mechanic wrote:AEN has MUCH MUCH longer gear ratios. Re: Ffz gearbox
Don't they can be physically stronger no but the ratios will not suit your car either. It was made for a 1.8 and 2l injection engined jetta which had a lot more torque.

Re: Ffz gearbox
Stephan, are you sure about the AEN having such long ratios?
My 1990 Fox (HM) has an AEN, very much OEM. And while the ratios are slightly longer than on my 1983 GTS, they are really very similar. IIRC, 3000 rpm comes to
about 40 km/h in 2nd
very close to 60 km/h in 3rd
very close to 80 km/h in 4th
and just shy of 100 km/h in 5th.
Highway at 120 is about 3500-3600, at 4000 rpm I cruise about 130.
(This is with both the original 165/85/13 or with the 185/65/14 that I later put on.)
Those seem like pretty standard "CitiGolf ratios" to me? Just asking, because I wouldn't classify them as "long" by a far cry.

Re: Ffz gearbox
http://www.brokevw.com/020ratios.html
AEN gearbox ratios are in there.
0.894 5th with a 3.667 final drive.
SO with your specified tyre it should be doing 140. But did you buy it new? IE knew for sure it was the original box with original ratios in?.

Re: Ffz gearbox
The car has been in our family (aunt, then myself) since 1990, bought new. I would have known about gearbox work.
OK, just checked the online speed calculator linked on that page. For my two tyre specs it says 136-137 km/h at 4000 rpm, 102 km/h at 3000 rpm. That's not far from my measurements; there may be a slight error in the speedo or the rev counter.
I wasn't aware that 136@4000 would classify as "much much longer" than other Citi boxes. To me, that's still quite short, and the HM doesn't feel slow or slow to accelerate. I had a "4+E" exchange box in my first Audi that did 140@3200, where I got my idea of "long".
Sorry to OP, didn't mean to derail thread.

Re: Ffz gearbox
oh well. - to the OP stick it in and see if you like it.
FFZ has a 3.94 diff so for the same 1,2 nd gear it will feel quite a bit lazier

Re: Ffz gearbox
I think it is the other way around, AEN 3.667 would feel lazier as the diff ratio is lower, resulting in longer gears.panic-mechanic wrote: ↑Mon Apr 23, 2018 8:05 pm oh well. - to the OP stick it in and see if you like it.
