When checking the fuses take them out, in both cases where I experienced this before the fuse was cracked across (hairline crack caused by vibration) so not easy to see with the fuse in place, also caused intermittent problems. You will see quick enough if you've found the cause if the fuse comes out in two pieces...

So i fetch the cabbie from bosch yesterday...
they told me its the pump. 10K to repair or 20k-30k to replace. Anyway I decided to take it home and start my inspection.
On my first attempt i see that the power steering fluid is literally just touching the tip of the dipstick.
Gonna top that up tonight but this dispstick strange, its green with recessed part but no indication where the fluid should be??

The wires are exposed and will short giving you a slightly heavier steering and a nice yellow warning light on the dash.
It is a **** to replace and route through the engine bay if you don't have midget hands but do able none the less.
New cable was R650 from VW
I was able to get under the car after work and traced the whole wire. It doesn't have cuts or exposed areas. I'm at a loss as to what could have caused my power steering to cut off intermittently.
The only thing that concerns me is when I removed the battery to have access to the reservoir the fluid had overflowed and was all over the platform the battery sits on. On top of that it is a white fluid vs a green or red fluid.
Any help is appreciated.
Edit 2: I finally pulled the pump down and the top of the tank was completely cracked and it had old glue all over it (which was also cracked). I replaced both the tank and the fluid and have a working system again.

Hi i have a 2006 Polo 1.6 Comfortline. POWERSTEERING ISSUE. when i start the car powerstteering is fine and no warning light. but as soon as i drive the ORANGE/YELLOW powersteering light comes on and steering is hard, but not very hard like its totally dead. also the ABS light is on.. Anyone can help??

Well, mine was the power steering fluid. had no leaks. but someone it lessened. No issues since.

VW POLO 2007. I battled with this issue steering wheel light illuminated on the dashboard and no power steering. PROBLEM IS SIMPLE : ONE OF THE STRIP LINK METAL FUSES WAS FAULTY ABOVE POSITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL. NOTE : THIS IS NOT THE PLASTIC ENCASED FUSES ON THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL ITS A THIN METAL STRIP (no colourful see through plastic housing we are used to but just a bare metal strip) it almost looks like LIKE PART OF THE BLACK PLASTIC BOX ON THE POSTIVE TERMINAL, TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM THE BLACK BOX ON THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL HOUSING THE colourful PLASTIC ENCASED FUSES. GOOGLE STRIP LINK FUSES AND SEE THE PICS ITS BASICALLY A THIN METAL STRIP to connect positive terminal to wire running to steering pump, on my car its the third wire from the left. Hope this helps anyone having same issue MAYBE BUY AND REPLACE ALL STRIP LINKS OR TEST BY CUTTING UP A NORMAL APPLIANCE POWER CABLE UP stripping it AND USING ONE OF THE three THIN ELECTRIC CABLEs to replace the link strip. GOODLUCK, best to take to VW SPECIALIST TELL THEM TO RESET POWER STEERING AND REPLACE METAL STRIPS COST SHOULD JUST BE ABOUT R350 +-

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF FUSES! THE NORMAL COLOURFUL PLASTIC ENCASED FUSES USUALLY ON THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL! AND THE OTHER TYPE STRIP LINK METAL FUSES ON THE POSITIVE TERMINAL. MY PROBLEM WAS THE STRIP LINK FUSES LOOKED FINE BUT WERE NOT BASICALLY OPEN CIRCUIT AND HENCE NO POWER TO STEERING PUMP hence light on dashboard illuminated and no power steering

IF THE LIGHT ON DASHBOARD IS ON, THEN IT MEANS YOUR POWER STEERING PUMP IS SWITCHED OFF.
WHY? BECAUSE NO POWER TO THE PUMP

Because the fuses are blown, in my case the metal strip link fuse, not the usual other type

Take to a vw specialist mechanic with a laptop to reset power steering (the back door type of mech not the dealership) . To reset usually costs nothing to replace the metal strip link fuses and reset power steering light costs R350. no replacing wiring to steering rack sensors etc, no replacing pump, nothing...just a thin piece of metal fuse. DONE! !!!

Two lights on dashboard (power steering and abs) is bad earthing or loose battery terminal connection, also if battery going faulty will give similar symptoms. Tighten battery terminals and disconnect and reconnect earth strap on negative terminal. Spray it with some Q20 and if you have to replace it and see what happens. Take battery in for testing.

Also had the problem of steering light coming on in dashboard and thanks to the forum I discovered quickly that the strip metal fuse was cracked. I replaced with a new one R60 from dealer and the problem was solved. Thanks to the forum.

I'm having the problem with my 2011 polo 6, the is no communication between the power steering pump and steering angle sensor,checked the plugs everything was said to be fine with plugs but still no communication and the steering light is on and the power steering is not working properly,what might be the problem?

Then the cable must be broken... happened to mine, touched the exhaust and burned one of the wires through.

hey guys i have a problem with my 2014 polo TSI steering wheel its so heavy even more than those old cars with no power steering and there is a red sign showing the steering , when i went to WV they told me that there is a problem with the electric power steering coil please help this part cost about R 32 000 and i don't even have an idea what caused this.

They quoted you on a complete steering rack. If it is the motor then thatbis basically the only option besides finding one at a scrapyard.

Power steering is causing problems on my 06. 9N3 polo SDI,
sometimes the yellow steering wheel light stays on when i start the car and the power steering doesnt work, then i turn it off and on again and it works again, sometimes it take 2-3 attempts to start the car with working power steering, and when it works it is mostly ok, only thing i notice.
The power steering oil has been replaced at 80k miles/120 k kilometers, now it is at 120k miles / 190 k km, and the problem with unresponsive powersteering has started about 10 k km ago.
Please help me, i have checked the fuse if its cracked, but it doesnt look like it, i dont know what else can i do.
I forgot to mention the problem was there with the old battery, and also stayed there after replacing with new battery and i also checked and retightened all the connections on the battery and fuses, no corrosion or cracks.
I can only check the connections on the rack, or maybe connectors on the pump, would contact spray help?
Is there any diagram where i can see where are all the sensors conencted.

Could you maybe instruct me how to do that, i do have some knowledge with cars i just need you to point me in the right direction so please dont just send me to the mechanic :-} i want to try to fix it myself, i have cleaned and retightened the main earth wire connection and also retightened all the connections to the fuses located on the battery and also contacts to the battery(not that they were loose or coroded), dont know where else to check, do i have to get under the car to find the wire from the steering rack?
I moved all the connectors and the power steering pump, should i try with the contact cleaner spray?
Maybe i should mention when going from a curve and letting the wheel straitghten itself it feels somewhat slightly jerky under hands, its not smoothly straigthening itself and the steering is (I would say) about 15% harder then it should be.
I should say also i have problems with AC(Climatic manual) sometimes, it can turn on by itself and stay on inspite of AC button that turns light on or off when pressed, AC compressor stays on. It can be caused by going in reverse sometimes or heavy starts. There are also some gremlins with the recirculation button.
AC only bothers me because i unnecesarily lose cca 20% of power on 47kW engine XD, But im not so much bothered with the AC as much as I am with the power steering not starting ocasionaly, but maybe it has something to do with it.

Did u remove the fuses from the battery terminals and clean them up or u just cleaned them in place?
U tightened the battery terminals, but are the terminals really tight on the battery?
These oem polo terminals are crap. Try turning the terminals by hand - if it turns, u gotta do something about it.
I also noticed that, from the battery negative u have the short wire going to the strut tower, is the stud that the wire screws onto still solid in place? (They tend to kind of get loose and break of)
Im not exactly sure where the ground wire is bolted on for the powersteering pump, but there are quite a few earth points in the engine bay. I can remember 3 right now..
1. There is 1 above the lhs driveshaft, not very far from the gearbox mounting) 10mm nut (probably for the ecu)
2. Theres 1 on the upper starter bolt, 13mm nut (engine electronics and starter)
3. And the 1 on the strut tower. (If this 1 is faulty, all other earth points are gonna be giving u hell, its the main earth point)
Check all these points, clean them up with sandpaper and retighten with some grease.
Thats about the most u can diy, any further than that and u gonna have to do some testing and stuff which will be more intricate.

Hi.
My wife's 2011 Polo sedan power steering feels "sticky", but still turns without much effort. It is only when you start to turn that it is "sticky".
Took it to VW and they said the power steering motor must be replaced...R 38 000!!!
Is there anything I can check that could be an obvious culprit before I spend that amount of money?

Had a problem like that on a sportline, the oil was low and it was dark black. Maybe check your fluid and flush the system

If im not mistaken i think the 2011 still has the hydroelectric pump. Its electric but still uses fluid
