golf 1 1100 engine rebuild

Post by flyer »

Hi gentleman, I'm new. Thanks for your comment in advance. Has 1978 golf1 1100cc, 3 speed automatic. 100 000km. Body and inside revamped recently. Now engine overheats to about almost (but not yet) touching the red line. Drives OK, engine runs nice an even. Uses no oil. Oil clean with no signs of water therein. My pressure testing shows headgasket leaks , and possible some piston rings and/or valves leaking also. My question: Rebuild or replace engine? If rebuild, who in SA sells these 1100 parts? If replace, with what type/make engine? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

WHY?????

The radiator is too small for SA conditions, the engine has no power whatsoever and (engine) parts are unobtainable.

Drop in a 1.6 carb motor, upgrade the brakes & clutch - should cost about the same.

If it were me I would rebuild but I have this strange fascination with keeping things as original as possible for as long as possible. I think you'll struggle with parts for the engine so most would advise simply replacing it with a more common engine.

I think you are going to have a hard time finding parts. But phone a few places and see. Otherwise you drop in newer motor. You have to move engine mounts and gearbox links etc etc.

Read: it's a major undertaking to change it to the newer type motor. It can be done, but it's not an easy DIY.

Parts can be gotten, if you look around.

Thank you very much for your supportive suggestions. Will cut emotional link with `original golf` , and go for replacement engine . Performance after all contributes to the joy of driving. (Will need expert hand since I`m not qualified for this job). Do I assume correctly, the replacement must include a manual gearbox ?

Yes. That gearbox will not mate to the newer style engines.

And body work to relocate engine mount, front brakes, drive shafts, steering rack for linkage mounts, gear linkages, clutch cable, brake booster and master cylinder, cooling system complete, and so on.

Not saying don't do it, just saying have your eyes open.

Classic parts phone Helmut spares in Jhb. Could help you solve the current issue without making new ones.

1979 golf1 1100 . Factory replacement engine 1983 1.6 carb built in. Runs beautifully with 3 speed auto. Put in bigger radiator and fan. Now need opinion please. When switch on parking lights during driving, the temp gauge goes up, and fuel gauge also a bit. Main lights do not cause this. Checked all light and engine grounds - looks good. When I disconnect (parking lights on) front parking lights ground wires on both, or one side, the parking lights remains on ! I do not know when this started, since I never ran parking lights only during driving. Only tested my new daytime running LED ' s (they are linked to parking live wire right side, when I realized the temp gauge responding to switching parking lights , with LED's, on and off. My mechanic says this problem has him by the b...... Can anybody help out here please?
