Cti clutch change advice

Post by 94CTi »

Hi all,

I need to change my clutch in my citigolf CTi. It's not slipping, but I can't adjust the cable anymore, and the clutch take really low. I also struggle to get reverse sometimes without the gears grinding. I usually switch the car off and select reverse then start again. I've done about 260,000km on the current clutch so I figure it's about time..

What parts should I get and any rough pricing will be appreciated. Also please let me know what other parts that I should change whilst the box is out, as I don't want to deal with any other issues.
I took the info below from other posts.

Clutch and pressure plate. Sachs? 210mm?
Should it be a single or double dowel?
Goldwagen in Midrand quoted R1600 and R1700 respectively. Sounds expensive!

Release bearing
Push rod
Some or other copper bush that goes on the push rod.
What are the names of the seals that I need?
Gearbox oil? Capacity and any recommendations please.

I have no clue about the job, and will not be doing it myself, but I want to buy the parts, and pay for labour alone.

Thank you.

Most people just get a clutch kit which consists of a clutch and pressure plate, release bearing and the plate the rod pushes against (dont know what its called). U can either go for LUK, Sachs, or Valeo. Used all 3 makes before on many cars without any hassle.

The rod is sold separately, length differs between 4 and 5 speed (i know a cti is 5 spd), but spareshops make mistakes.. alot of mistakes. You could also get a new "green cap" at goldwagon for about R30.

Single or double dowel depends on your flywheel which you should get resurfaced or replaced. If im not mistaken, a cti should use a 210mm clutch. (A good few threads about clutches on the forum)

Regarding seals, u can replace the rear main seal (get a victor reinz seal)

The gearbox should hold 2L of oil, castrol 75w90 should be ok.

U could get your mechanic to check the gear linkages, cv boots, etc, while replacing the clutch.

Not sure on Jhb pricing, in Dbn, a LUK or Valeo kit goes for between 950-1300, and a new flywheel at R750.

Give vw a call, i heard a few people say they had LUK clutch kits going cheap.

Hi Ashveer, thanks for the advice.
Panic, got a price for R1450 for a Sachs from a different Goldwagen..
VW will get back to me, as they have difficulty in accessing old vehicle info...
