1.8 16v throttle project

Post by TEAM 16V »

Hi guys...
First timer to the golf for but been a golf man all my life....
I am current busy with my 1.8 16v kr motor, going throttle setup, all parts are standard, replace piston rings and mains for safety's sack, other then that original from top to bottom...

Im running 20v throttles from the toyotas.

However got one problem with the water housing that seems to have no play when throttle and intake is assembled.

ANY IDEAS WILL HELP ???
EVEN ANY TIPS ON ADDING A LITTLE MORE POWER FOR MY NA 1.8 16V KR THROTTLE SETUP.

Where are you based and pm me your email address or whatsapp number and I will send you some pictures. You have two options, block the water on the front of the motor or modify the flange by cutting and welding it and angle it downward to clear the throttles. Photobucket not working anymore and internet slow connection at work or I could have uploaded pictures here via postimage. Can upload next weekend when I'm back at home.

Yup, easiest is to block off the front port. Means you have to re-route big parts of the water system though, and in my case, I had to remove the thermostat also because of it.

Have you sorted some plan for the alternator yet? That was the biggest issue I had to deal with.

Did you go the ABF and 6pk belt route? Post pictures here to help him out.

Yeah so my initial idea was to turn my 8V into a throttled 16V, with a budget of R0.00.

Plan was literally to use what I had lying around (2E sub, KR head, and a garage full of random bits).

In the end, I used the front bracket off some MK3, alternator off some Polo, and then converted the whole bunch of pulleys to the flat-belt setup. But this involved making my own bottom pulley.

Basically, it was a mess (and still ended up costing around R40k all in).

Issue is that with the stock setup, the alternator fouls on the throttles, but this will kinda depend on which adapter/manifold you're using.

I'm happy to take some pics tonight of what I ended up doing.

Oh, it's also worth adding that I used this adapter to get the Toyota setup to bolt to the 16V Golf.

With this guy, you don't have a choice but to block off the front water channel.

Sorry for hijacking the OP's thread, but did you reshape the top of the port on the head the same as the adaptor to get rid of the edges on the head for better airflow?

Nope. Time didn't allow.

And then it made more HP than I was expecting, so for now I'm not going to bother either.

When I build the "special" version of this motor in a little while, I'll bother with stuff like that.

Well something interesting about that. Many years ago reading books on performance there were some interesting opinions of some serious tuners.
allowing a manifold that is slightly smaller than the port does 2 things
1) creates a almost venturi effect as the air speeds up as it passes that point.
2) when the air reversal happens when the valve closes that same step creates turbulance which then stops or slows down the air reversal and tumbles the fuel air mixture which is still there which helps to mix it.
so they basically found that it makes more power than actually perfectly port matching the head and manifold.

Thanks guys for all the advise and guide.... We managed to find a water housing at motor-drive.

We current at the stage with the altenator, my friend and master machanic Patrick mentioned about the polo brucket that might work....

I would love to share some pics of our current progress but still finding my feet amoung the forum... Really appreciate all the feedback and the shares ideas

Keen to see how you build this.

You are on the right track with alternator and bracket.

So a noob question, I have an aal motor on a mk2, is there no way to install the Toyota itb's without moving the alternator? Does the polo bracket accommodate the air on also?

Polo / golf3 basically any of the modern flat belt setups are low enough to get throttles on. No AAL stock setup will not work. Still sits too high.

So if I use Sarels adapter can I use the Toyota fuel rail and injectors? Do I just need a management and injector plugs?

Yes, the itb's with the injectors integrated in the fuel rail bolt straight on the adaptor plate. Get the plugs that fit on the injectors and wire up to aftermarket engine management.

And then cut a huge hole in the bonnet becuase it does not close afterwards.

Unfortunately, yes.

But. Me and another forum member will be building a plenum for mine, that should fit just fine with the rad we're using, with no cutting necessary. Can then duct air in from the side, and still use the short trumpets inside the plenum.

It's a bust then, no way I will cut my bonnet for it.

I guess it's back to saving up for a VR6 swap nowImage

The throttles clear, and even with short tubes it will still clear.

Problem only appears when you try and put the long tubes on (the ones that actually add HP).

Here's my car to illustrate:

This is why it's worth it though. While looking for those two previous pics, I found this one. It's my worked 8V on throttles with 298 cam, and 8V Performance stage 3 head, vs the above 16V, on panic's dyno:
