Golf5 1.6 2005 Instrument cluster problem.
When the ignition key is on, the cluster shows all lights and the driver info display. Start the engine and all cluster lights and info display die - even the speedo and rev counter back lights and indicator lights die.
The only difference I can see is that a running engine (alternator) turns the cluster off (except for speedo, tacho and temperature gauges).
Also, the fuel gauge doesn't work at all which coincides with the onset of the dark cluster.
Anyone seen this problem? Agents tell me that the cluster is faulty, my gut says some gremlin climbs out of a running engine and throttles the cluster.
Instrument cluster dies when engine starts!
