VW golf one 1.8 Carb car cranks but won't start

Post by darrylza100 »

Good evening Please assist me.

I have a vw golf one 1.8 carb engine. The care cranks but refuses to start it my first time experiencing such an issue. I will detail what I have done so far and what I have experienced when I tried to fix the problem. The car is an 1980 model.

1. I did test the module on another golf and it worked fine.
2. I replaced the coil and still it won't start.
3. I tested with two distributors and the car still won't start.

4. The mechanic came to check the car and said the car won't because timing was out, he set the timing and check for spark we found out that the car has a weak speak. I went as far as replacing the sparks plugs.

5. Today I tired starting it after replacing the speak plugs. It as if the car wanted to start but it backfired and made an explosive noise.

what can cause a weak spark and backfiring when I attempt to start the car ?

How does one know what a good spark should look like ?

How does one know what a good spark should look like? Because the spark I get is blue

Hi,

1.Check your whether your orientation of your plug leads are correct
2. Spark is generated from the coil coupled with your ignition module. Check all wiring and earths.
3.Check if all 3 your timing marks line up.(google this)

He says he tested with a different distributor so kinda means he did. The fact that it backfires tells me the timing is out. So either the cam timing is out or the ignition timing is out. It is possible your mechanic got it out 180 degrees or simply too slow. SLOWLY turn the distributor clcokwise while somebody cranks it and see if it wants to start. rememebr there is risk of shocking so try not to hold it by the cap but rather by the distrubutor stem while doing that.
