Hi Guys
Since buying my Polo 2nd hand a year ago, I've had an annoying whining noise when accelerating in 1st gear.
It was picked up when I had the the DEKRA check done prior to buying the car. The tech said it didn't sound like a major problem. It doesn't appear to have gotten worse in the last year, but it is annoying.
Earlier this week, I took it for it's 90k service and asked VW to check it out. They said it sounds like the gearbox support bearings, but they could only tell for sure if they dropped the box and opened it up. They said the labour would be R6200 before any actual repair work was done. I said "Thanks very much, you can leave the gearbox for the time being."
I've searched the forum for gearbox whine issues, and found the below:
http://vwclub.co.za/forum/viewtopic.php?f=93&t=184760
I have the whine noted by Stompie, but not the grinding noise, and it's only in 1st.
I know nothing about gearboxes, does VW's possible diagnosis sound right? If so, is it something to worry about?
If I wanted to get it fixed, any ideas what it may cost?
If I wanted to get it looked at, could anyone suggest a good, trustworthy VW gearbox guy in the Cape Town / Bellville / Durbanville area? Near or in Stellenbosch would be better though.
Help appreciated.
Cheers
Rob

He's in the cape so vagspec is an1600 km drive away.....
But anyway it is a common thing on those boxes and is an input shaft bearing.
If it has not changed or gotten worse in a year then just ignore it.

I had my gearbox give issues took it to VW kimberly ended costing me 24k to have it reconed(long story) my advice if it gives issues rather look at a second hand one, i know Kavel was selling one for 6k might be worth buying and just keeping for incase yours goes.

I'll monitor it and if it gets worse, will look at getting the input shaft bearing replaced.
I appreciate the responses.

Input Shaft Bearing it is.
Ours made the same sound end of last year, but the plastic casing on the bearing shattered due to leaving it for so long, could still drive. Car just made a weird grinding noise of all the plastic pieces moving around in there.
Dropped box, replaced input shaft bearing with new one, car drives like a dream again also did clutch kit with new DMF same time.
