Possibility of a Citi Golf TDI conversion

Post by Tbird »

Hey guys,

just thinking out aloud here but what are the thoughts of sticking a 1.9TDI motor into a Citi Golf? I know there were diesel mk1s in the 80s, my brothers ex wife had one, used to do over 1000km on a tank but was as slow as a tractor and vibrated like one too. Not sure if any of them came out in a diesel turbo version.

Any thoughts or ideas on this? Is it possible? I know it wont be cheap LOL. Would the Polo gearbox also be needed?

It has been done. Best would be to get an entire donor car as you would need the ECU, motor, gearbox, cluster and the key.

Then you would obviously need to beef up the suspension to handle the torque.

Definately not something you would do if you on a budget build or if you don't have the skills to DIY

I remember many moons ago there was a thread here of a caddy that has a 1.9tdi conversion.
i am sure someone will be able to find the link for you, i dont know if the motor is a straight into the citi engine bay.

If you plenty of money and time, it is doable.

If you have the time and money plus the skills then it would turn out to be one epic build.

With that amount of torque on such a light body will yield loads of fun and hidings .

Now imagine doing a 2260 upgrade           , oh my sack.

There are very few in SA that I know of but this is becoming more common overseas with everything from MkII Golf TDi to MkIV Golf TDi to 9n Polo TDi engines used. This is by far my favourite but then it did cost over £10k to do just the engine conversion...

I've heard that Spitronics is busy developing a tdi management system.
If they are successful I see a lot of mk1 tdi's popping up.

Standard management is easily customizable so I don't think that is the issue.

a 20vT and 1.9 TDI conversion will cost around the same but it's easier to get stupid power out of a 20vT

Easier to put that power down on a tdi, and still be driveable as a daily, you really need a donor car

I did aftermarket ECU's once... and that will be the last

I would go with a donor car or I would do it

Management has always been an issue, there is nothing currently on the market that can manage PD injection, besides an OEM ECU.
