polo 9n ABS and hand brake light

Post by Shivbeanz »

Hi guys, so today I get into my car, start up fine and drive off. Then whenever I turned the steering, the abs light and brake light came on and beeped-the instrument cluster lights also dipped whilst moving the steering. I then switched the car off and it wouldn't swing at all after. Had to kick start the car, and drove home fine after that.
Is my battery going or bad earth somewhere?

Check the blade fuses on top of the battery. You might see a small hairline crack in the ones marked with the arrow.

As a very temporary measure only (as in driving from home to VW to buy new fuses) you can loop a metal paper clip between the bolts.

I say again - temporary only.

The earth cable between the battery and car is corroded. Just sand the terminals down and reattaches to car body.

Hi guys, just checked the top fuses and the battery earth cable, all fine. Although I suspect it may be the battery earth cable as I spilt water whilst topping up the windscreen washer water and I now see that the earth cable is just behind the reservoir. Will see how it goes and get the battery checked too
Thanks for the help guys :hurray:

Howsit Bud

I also experienced the same problem with my sportline, it is definetly a power problem. The battery voltage and output current is too low.
I only use my sportline on weekends and find that after a proper drive and when battery properly charged, the problem is solved,

You will find the problem will persist when u use your headlights or especially if u have amps in your car. Check voltage of battery before start up and after start up, check if alternater is charging sufficiently, spray some Q20 on your terminal and earthing lug.

Thanks for the info Ghost! :hurray:

Since I last posted there have been no problems, but in the past two days, the battery is dead overnight.
Charged it yesterday, started up fine, and now this morning it wont swing and volt meter reads 10V.

I'm not too clued up on batteries, but could this be a symptom of a bad battery? Or is something drawing current when the car is off?
I do have an amp installed, but I have a switch and always switch it off when leaving the car-other than that there are no other mods.

Thanks

Glad u sorted dude,

Late reply, if u have a multimeter measure the current(amps)when the car is standing, everything switched off.

I had a problem where the guys damaged my cross over when installing my sound and when my car battery started dying I tested the amps and found out that the cross over was drawing a constant 1 amp even when the sound was off. That is a lot of current especially when the car is standing.
