Gabriels are cheap (around R500 to R600 for the rear (2 shocks) and about R700 to R800 for the front (2 shocks). If you lowered your car - these arent great and I would rather opt for a Koni or Bilstein setup. Koni's are roughly around R4k for the full set.

Just so i am clear, i know that the life awas a little lower than normal citi's, so if i ask for life shocks and springs i should go lower albeit a little only?

then do it properly - get koni's

i know on the citi's that came with 15inch wheels (velo, rox, r line and 1.8i)

1) front shock and rear spring is the same as the normal citi range
2) front spring and rear shock is different. shock is an agents only part and no gabriel or aftermarket option is available.

small drop but noticeable in my opinion.

Remember all the imported springs H&R and Eibach were designed for a very much lighter car than we currently have in SA now due to spec changes and safety upgrades the MK 1 got heavier , so if H&R / Eibach say 30 or 35 mm it will go lower . The lowered Mk 1 s don't ride well on standard shocks and particularly cheap ones Gab and Mon and so on ( or the imitation cheap black Bilsteins ) these are all in the same league RUBBISH . The KONI sport adjustable is the best thing you can do to the car , serviceable , adjustable ,unbelievable performance and the rake of the car can be adjusted by the rear shock . Pricy unfortunately R 5800.00 now .
Be cautious as in 2007 the rear spring and shock were changed slightly by VW and the sport springs all sat too low at the rear . If you do a spring and shock conversion this does not apply on any model obviously .
Hope that helps . S

Also remember , shocks are a serviceable part of the car , and have to be replaced regularly , Some manufacturers say every 40 k kilos , this is a little bit over the top but seriously at 75 to 100 k really need to change , If a shock is not leaking it does not mean it is ok , far from it , leaking and mileage are the ways to tell if they are gone . Don't trust shaky machines at the local Speedy they test the mounting rubbers and the tyre pressure and not the shock accurately ha ha . If the car feels wobbly or uncertain change the shocks definitely . A very safety critical part of the car that is always over looked till its too late . Lowering cars with standard or cheap shocks is why these forums are full of complaints about hard ride , and the springs always take the wrap . It definitely is not the springs , its the shocks so if you lower a car with springs only do not expect handling , performance or comfort , because all that comes from the shock not the spring . S

I have Gabriel shortened shocks with H&R springs. I enjoy the ride. I just changed shocks and the Gabriel gave me 100000km. The springs was the best money spent.

on my 1.8i i found the overall ride harder than the stock oil shocks. the spring seat on the rears made the car higher at the back so i changed the rears to OEM and the ride was softer but the handling was better than stock..

Gabriel shortened shocks on Koni springs are horrific!
My car touches all the time compared to the Koni shocks I had. I should have spent the extra cash and went for a Koni shock.
