ABF Alternator Bracket (Pic up new part)
Hi all,
So after seeing Wikus's setup on the ADY he bought for the caddy I decided to get me the bracket from VW. So it arrived and it fits perfectly on the motor, but the 90 amp alternator the import engine came with does not look like it will work as it is intended to do. It misses the tensioner spring completely. Ideally I would like a 70 amp alternator does anybody know which alternator fits on this bracket and works with the spring as intended? Where to get a alternator that fits preferably in Pretoria somewhere? If someone can help me with a pic of how it should look like I will greatly appreciate it.
See on the following pic, the spring on the bottom of the bracket misses the alternator completely.
We tried everything to get it aligned, but no show.

Re: ABF Alternator Bracket
you can make something to bolt onto the alternator between the two lobes that catch the spring, take a tube (pipe) with triangle plate welded to it and bolt it in between the 2 lobes, just weld a support onto it that prevent it tilting backwards when spring tension pressed against the triangle plate, did a couple of them and they works grate

Re: ABF Alternator Bracket
We used the 1.4's tensioner bracket and it looks like it can work, I need a new alternator anyway, would just like to know what type of alternator works with this spring setup, the bracket was listed on the ETKA system as a direct replacement to the ABF instead of the bracket that holds the ac pump and power steering pump. I saw this bracket on Wikus's ADY and thought looks neat and simple. I haven't upgraded the 1.4's charging wire so that's why I would prefer to get a 70 amp alternator or so.vwpro wrote:you can make something to bolt onto the alternator between the two lobes that catch the spring, take a tube (pipe) with triangle plate welded to it and bolt it in between the 2 lobes, just weld a support onto it that prevent it tilting backwards when spring tension pressed against the triangle plate, did a couple of them and they works grate
Thanks for your reply, will definitely look into this if I don't get a suitable alternator.

Re: ABF Alternator Bracket
I've got the exact same setup, made up a bracket to tension the belt. I used a 6PK975 belt and made the bracket to suit the belt. I'm not using the bracket in the pic anymore, it had just enough play on the ball-ends to cause vibration on the alternator, I now use an aluminium bracket.

Re: ABF Alternator Bracket
If all else fails l will have to make a plan like yours Torker. I browsed on the internet and it looks like a 1.9tdi T4 alternator. It comes with 70A charging rate, perfect. But finding one will probably now be a mission.
This looks like the exact alternator for that bracket?

Re: ABF Alternator Bracket
I had that bracket and alternator at one point in time. Wouldn't it just be a Mk3 non-AC with power-steering alternator?

Re: ABF Alternator Bracket
Hi guys,
Looks like I have found a new Bosch alternator, it will be with me tomorrow, I went everywhere today searching for the right one even Diesel Electric does not have, but went to Stargen Auto Elec here in Pretoria North, and they ordered me one.
Lets hold thumbs and hope its the right part.

Pulley is a bit bigger so alternator turns slower, useful at high rpm to help the alternator stay in one piece, it's also got a one-way mechanism inside, when you are revving the engine the alternator turns, when you let go of the accelerator the alternator freewheels. This takes the strain off the belt and eliminates the 'belt-hop' on deceleration.

Re: ABF Alternator Bracket
I think so, the brackets like we have are prone to cracking and breaking through the mounting points, I believe it's because of the belt hopping on deceleration, it can be quite violent. If you can eliminate that the bracket will last longer. The fact that it's bigger than standard is just an added benefit.Pieta wrote:Aaah, now I see. Nic definitely needs one, after Kyalami. Paid R1955 incl. for a new part, fits the bracket perfectly. EA1308 is what is on the alternator and the box there are a part number 305.501.090 or CA740IR. Re: ABF Alternator Bracket (Pic up new part)
Quick Google indicates that part number is for a brand called "Cargo". Looks like a decent unit and price.Pieta wrote: Paid R1955 incl. for a new part, fits the bracket perfectly. EA1308 is what is on the alternator and the box there are a part number 305.501.090 or CA740IR. Pic is up.
